Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
What really came first was the misconception that humans are entitled to both!
But chickens and their eggs aren’t ours. #InternationalRespectForChickensDay
Your dinner had a life and didn’t want to die 💔 #InternationalRespectForChickensDay

In a brightly lit biosecurity level 2 (BSL2) microbiology laboratory, I stand out against the backdrop of white countertops, shelves lined with lab equipment, and pops of colour from red trays and a vivid yellow clinical waste bin. I am dressed in a dramatic, floor-length Jedi robe of deep brown, its wide sleeves draping over my arms. Facing the camera and completing the ensemble, I wear a comically oversized rooster mask, its orange beak and red comb boldly jutting out, feathers painted in lively hues. In my hands, I grip a glowing blue lightsaber, holding it confidently at an angle in front of my body as if defending from errant StormTrooper fire. The playful fusion of Star Wars Day and International Respect For Chickens Day is unmistakable-your costume humorously bridges science fiction and animal advocacy, bringing a sense of fun and celebration into the serious, orderly environment of the laboratory. The scene is both whimsical and memorable, with my creative outfit injecting joy and personality into the sterile lab setting.

Ito Sözan (Japanse, b. 1884) Family of Chickens, c. 1910s Woodblock print, ink and color on paper Museum purchase with funds from the Friends of the Trout Gallery 2022.3
Katsushika Hokusai (Japanese. 1760-1849) Album of Original Drawings by Katsushika (Katsushika shinso gafu), vol. 1, 1890 Woodblock-printed book, ink and color on paper Museum purchase with funds from the Friends of the Trout Gallery 2022.13 Though known for his single-sheet landscape designs, Hokusai also created numerous illustrated books. This one, published posthumously in the Meiji period (1868-1912), also contains a table of content in English. It indicates that the book might be intended for display at World Expositions. In the 1880s and 1890s, the japanese government promoted the development of traditional arts in order to create a robust export market with the West. Illustrated books such as this one gave potential Western consumers a variety of designs for individual prints and other commodities. Images such as Ito Sozan's Family of Chickens in this exhibition were likely adapted from such illustrated books that served as design templates for print designers.
