Cropped image of a page from an illuminated manuscript with Naskh script and an illustration of what was originally a sawfish, but in later versions and like this one often looked more like a swordfish as the "blade" was drawn without the "teeth" details seen in the earliest known version. Opaque watercolor, ink, gold and silver on paper; DIMENSIONS (of full page): H x W: 32.7 × 22.4 cm (12 7/8 x 8 13/16 in) Freer Gallery of Art F1954.62 https://asia.si.edu/object/F1954.62/

Here’s a #sawfish in the earliest surviving version of al-Qazwini's 'Aja'ib al-Makhluqat wa Ghara'ib al-Mawjudat (aka The Wonders of Creation), Wasit, Iraq, 1280 CE.
In later versions, it was often depicted more like a #swordfish (2nd image, Iraq or E. Türkiye, 15th c. CE).

#InternationalSawfishDay is an annual event on Oct 17 to raise awareness of endangered sawfish and the threats they face. This Common sawfish is from Ichthyologie; ou, Histoire naturelle des poissons (1796 ). The species is now critically #endangered www.biodiversitylibrary.org/page/4786809 🧪
Sawfish use their tooth-studded rostrums to detect electrical signals from prey hidden in sand. These intelligent rays are critically endangered with some species down 90%. Habitat destruction and fishing nets threaten their survival. Support marine conservation! #InternationalSawfishDay

Peche Espade (Sawfish) “This marine animal is very difficult to catch; being caught, it tears the nets with its snout to get away, thus making a passage for other fishes caught with it.” “In 1983, The Morgan Library & Museum received, as the bequest of Clara S. Peck, an extraordinary volume whose beautiful paintings and descriptions document the plant, animal, and human life of the Caribbean late in the sixteenth century. Spaniards had already begun to exert influence over the indigenous people of the area when explorers from England and France arrived, among them Sir Francis Drake. The volume, known as the Drake Manuscript and titled Histoire Naturelle des Indes when it was bound in the eighteenth century, gives us a wonderful picture of daily life at the time of Drake's many visits to the region. Although Drake's connection to the manuscript is uncertain, he is mentioned on more than one occasion by the authors. Drake himself is known to have painted, but none of his work survives.”
