Three students pose together at an indoor reception. All are wearing nametags: one in a black-and-white checkered dress, one in a light blue sparkly dress, and one in a gray sweater and black skirt with a silver belt. They are smiling with arms around each other. A coffee station and other guests are visible behind them.

A student with long, wavy hair and glasses stands in front of a research poster titled “Exploring Student Experience of their Problem-Solving Process for Open-Ended Modeling Projects in Mechanics Courses.” She is wearing a tan cable-knit sweater and a name badge. The background shows a university setting with a blue banner and other poster displays.

A group of nine students stands in a lush field surrounded by tall greenery and wildflowers, with trees and blue sky in the background. Most are smiling and making peace signs. They wear name badges and a mix of casual clothes including hoodies, T-shirts, and backpacks.

Two smiling students laugh and look at a phone in a bright engineering lab. One holds the phone while the other gestures excitedly. A prototype with wires and a paper flower is visible on the workbench in front of them, along with pens, laptops, and backpacks. The mood is playful and collaborative.

I have been in engineering since my first professional job in July, 1990. I worked with & for so many remarkable women. Engineering much more diverse now but so much more that can be done to diversify and maintain progress.

Text reads: Meet the Team. Diyaa Rahman, Hydrogen Academy Research Intern

Diyaa is a Bertz Associates Intern, starting in the summer of 2025, in collaboration with the European Hydrogen Academy Project. She is studying towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Birmingham and wishes to pursue a path that will benefit the world and its people.
Outside of academics, Diyaa is passionate about inclusion and diversity in all aspects: overseeing the relaunch of E-Connect (an ethnic minority mentoring scheme), handling social media for iEPS (Islamic Engineering and Physical Sciences society) and sitting as student representative. In her spare time, Diyaa is Secretary of and volunteers for Birmingham STAR (Student Action for Refugees).

Why did you want to study engineering?
I wanted to study Chemical Engineering because I love how it’s about taking ideas and seeing the bigger picture. We carry out and use data-driven research to optimise current processes or invent better ones! We are directly able to make a change and are actively taught to employ problem-solving skills so that one day we can tackle the world’s unsolved problems. The degree also focuses a lot on sustainability and being aware of the impact we as Engineers can have on our planet – it’s our job to make sure this isn’t a negative one.

Text reads: Why did you want to work with Bertz Associates and the European Hydrogen Academy?
This role as a collaboration between Bertz Associates and the European Hydrogen Academy really interested me due to the overlap of science and education. It combines research skills and creativity with outreach and communication – an area I’d never really considered before. Bertz Associates fosters an incredible community, working hard to overcome barriers and so to intern with them really is a privilege. The work being done on this specific project is important in directly educating younger generations on a topic impacting our world whilst simultaneously encouraging these students who are the leaders and innovators of the future.
