A stunning image of the Cigar Galaxy (M82), an irregular galaxy showcasing a galactic superwind. The image highlights filaments of ionized hydrogen gas extending over 10,000 light-years, glowing red. Located 12 million light-years away in Ursa Major, M82 is the brightest infrared galaxy in the sky.

A stunning astrophotograph of the Cygnus Wall, a W-shaped ridge of emission within the North America Nebula (NGC 7000). The image showcases the reddish glow of ionized hydrogen, highlighting the intricate details of dark dust clouds silhouetted against the bright nebula. This 20 light-year-long cosmic structure is a stellar nursery, where new stars are born within the cool gas and dust clouds. The image is a mosaic constructed from narrowband data.

Image of quasar H1821+643, located a quarter of the way across the visible universe. Analysis of its light reveals absorption by ionized oxygen, suggesting a vast amount of unseen ionized hydrogen in the universe – a potential clue in the search for dark matter. The quasar is indicated by a white arrow.
