Proud to have cast my vote early this morning for Catherine Connolly. Dignified, compassionate, and qualified - I look forward to calling her President Connolly! #áras25 #irishpresidentialelection

Whatever happens today, the next president will be a female college graduate from University of Galway, with many years of political experience. For those who wish for a greater choice of candidates, the next presidential election is likely to be in late 2032. #IrishPresidentialElection

1967 was also the year that Mary Robinson was called to the Bar, and arguably, her presidency set the template for subsequent holders of the office. And finally, 1967 was the year that the state guaranteed free secondary school education to all (up to 18 years old) #IrishPresidentialElection

It's Presidential election day today in Ireland. Democracy is a precious thing, so going to vote is a good thing. When I was born, the Irish President (De Valera) was a survivor of the 1916 Rising and a key figure in the fight for anyone in this state to have a vote. #IrishPresidentialElection

Nothing is won unless you go out and vote.

Just voted there. It takes less than a couple of mins, just seconds even, in the booth. Go vote!

I am voting for Catherine Connolly for President because now more than ever, we need an independent voice for peace and inclusivity in the Áras.

Our long string of independent-minded Irish Presidents speaking truth to power, like Michael D Higgins, Mary MacAleese, and Mary Robinson, has been the best aspect of our democracy in my lifetime, and it is so important to see that continue and be supercharged by Catherine Connolly.

The alternative - rewarding Fine Gael with their first ever Fine Gael President in Heather Humphreys after decades of failure - especially failing our generation with housing, climate, transport, and overall quality of life - is unimaginable to me. Having a FG President who just repeats the FG Gov talking points would be a massive downgrade for our democracy and politics. I was sure of that months ago and I'm even more sure after seeing Fine Gael's toxic US-style attack adverts against Catherine Connolly, alongside attempts to 'smear the bejaysus' out of her - dirty tactics which have no place in our politics.

I completely understand people's concerns that we only have 2 options on the ballot - the best thing about our democracy is that we don't ever typically have a forced 2 choices like they do in the UK and US, so it's a shame that we only have 2 options this time. That is due to Maria Steen not actually trying (only appearing a few weeks before deadline and refusing to try the council nomination route) and Gareth Sheridan not having a hope because FF and FG undemocratically banned councillors from having a free vote.

However, while spoiling your ballot is valid and many countries have a 'none of the above' option on the ballot (a great idea), I am urging you to take a few minutes to engage with the 2 options and ask yourself on polling day - is it really the exact same for you whether we have a president empowering the legacy of Michael D Higgins etc or whether we have a Fine Gael puppet as president, gaslighting us by repeating government lies that they are trying their best and doing everything they can to tackle the housing crisis and climate crisis??

Jim Gavin's name apparently remaining on the ballot despite withdrawing from the Presidential Election opens up the tantalising prospect of Heather Humphreys coming third in a two-horse race.

#Steen claims the grassroots want someone who flaunts a handbag costing almost 50% of the median income (seriously - it's apparently €20,000 worth of a bag!) as their "in-touch with family values" president.

The #IonaInstitute is not for the likes of thee or me.

Good to see that the clown show of presidential nominees has been rebuffed (with king clown McGregor not even trying). Hopefully, the election itself won't be turned into a circus by the media trying to generate controversy.

Woman who wanted to jail adopted people for tracing their natural parents realises that might come back to haunt her in a presidential campaign? (OK, she knew she wasn't getting anywhere when MM told her to fuck off, but I know which version I want to believe!) #IrishPresidentialElection

With the Irish presidential election coming up, I've recorded a short video explaining the role of the president. I do hope Conor McGregor sees this and learns a thing or two.

All I will say about the possible Presidential candidacy of Tony Holohan is #cervicalsmearscandal and his arrogant response to those women whose lives were devastated by what happened. No woman and certainly no feminist should or would vote further him. #speirgorm #irishpresidentialelection
