This is important because attitude towards civilians used to be a major difference between #JASDJ and the Islamic State local affiliate, #ISWAP. JASDJ was a sectarian plunder-and-kidnap machine, hitting hard at all non-members, including Muslims.

Indeed, I have direct testimonies from former #JASDJ #BokoHaram fighters that they were recently buying ammo from rogue Cameroonian soldiers. (I strongly suspect there are a few such rogue soldiers in all armies around, nothing Cameroonian about that).

Not easy to follow, but there seems to be a lot of security incidents in the Chadian Région du Lac. #JASDJ #BokoHaram seems fully at it - not attacking the military, but preying on civilians. Lots of kidnappings. Extracting ransom? Or trying to exert a degree of control?

6/x But #JASDJ and #ISWAP, the factions of Boko Haram would carry on without this. They'd buy from others, plunder from others. The ones who will suffer from a drop in assistance will be mostly innocent civilians.

Hearing some news from Lake Chad #BokoHaram... the Chadian military got fairly deep into the lake, to the vicinity of Madayi, on the Chad-Nigeria border. #ISWAP land, actually, not that of #JASDJ (which is the faction that carried out the attack on the Chadian garrison in Barkaram).
