Interpretation scenarios of recurrent MAC-PD in clinical settings. This schematic outlines four potential explanations for the recurrence of MAC-PD after therapy: (1) True relapse (2), reinfection by a genetically distinct strain (3), reinfection with the same strain, and (4) recurrence due to an undetected minor clone. These categories are defined by treatment outcome, environmental re-exposure, and differences in genomic similarity between isolates. MAC-PD, Mycobacterium avium complex pulmonary disease; SNP, single-nucleotide polymorphism.
The global burden of pulmonary disease caused by Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC-PD) is increasing. This #JClinMicro article presents clinical scenarios in which MAC-PD recurrence may occur and examines genotyping techniques for responding to them. asm.social/2GY
Darkfield microscopy of Leptospira culture.
#MicrobiologyMonday: Diagnosing leptospirosis in animals is tricky: symptoms vary widely & many infected animals show no signs at all. How to overcome these limitations? Get the details in #JClinMicro: asm.social/2FJ

Submit your research to JCM's Special Series, "Diagnostic Testing for Mycobacteria."
Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the world’s leading infectious killers, and NTM infections are rising. #JClinMicro invites submissions to our "Diagnostic Testing for Mycobacteria" series. 📄 Share your research now → asm.social/2B6
The laboratory billing process.
Confused by the lab billing process? This #JClinMicro review helps make sense of it by providing an overview of laboratory billing processes for insurance billing & hospital inpatient services, plus procedure codes used in these processes. asm.social/2A9
AveloMask Kit and breath aerosol collection procedure.
The AveloMask Kit is a user-friendly face mask that captures exhaled aerosols & transfers them into a buffer tube for detection of respiratory tract infections; it shows promising diagnostic accuracy for TB & is feasible for point-of-care use. #JClinMicro: asm.social/2zk
The resurgence of #syphilis in the US & globally underscores the urgent need for rapid, accessible testing. In #JClinMicro, Clark et al. test the performance of the first at-home, over the counter test for syphilis. @asm.org

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Reported cases of tick-borne diseases in the US from 2019 to 2022.
Various lab testing methodologies are available for diagnosis of tick-borne diseases, though the preferred approach varies. Learn about the epidemiology of tick-borne diseases in the U.S. and advances in the field of laboratory diagnostics in #JClinMicro: asm.social/2vN
Mantel correlations between manual and automated whole genome sequencing (WGS) methods. Scatter plots illustrating the allelic differences between isolates using the manual and automated WGS methods with correlating Mantel statistics for bacterial species with r values less than 0.9. (b) Minimum spanning trees (MSTs) for Acinetobacter baumannii, Campylobacter species, and Staphylococcus epidermidis. Although A. baumannii, Campylobacter species, and S. epidermidis demonstrated correlation coefficients of r = 0.895, 0.746, and 0.822, respectively, upon Mantel Spearman analysis, the variation in allelic differences between methods minimally affected final results. The two methods show concordant relatedness groupings for A. baumannii and Campylobacter species. Two S. epidermidis isolates (MBRL2787 and MBRL2788) differed by a single allelic difference between the two methods, moving them from “possibly related” with the manual method to “related” with the automated method.
An automated platform for bacterial nucleic acid extraction and whole genome sequencing yielded nearly equivalent results to a manual strain typing method while improving turnaround time and cost, with less manual pipetting. #JClinMicro: asm.social/2p0
Sample images from blood cultures in the Dartmouth-Hitchcock data set, digitized at 40× magnification. Top: a scale comparison between a WSI scan and gram-positive cocci in clusters. Bottom: representative patches depicting four categories of bacterial morphologies.
In #JClinMicro: a novel framework for artificial intelligence-based characterization of gram-stained whole-slide images. The method eliminates the need for manual annotations and demonstrates high accuracy and generalizability across multiple data sets. asm.social/2ja

First microarray-based IgM and/or IgG target down-selection by individual level evaluation of antibody responses in controlled human infection samples (I-VIII). Candidate targets were down-selected by a combinatorics approach with requirements for low baseline signal (specificity; MFI<10000) and positive response at week 12 and/or 16 post infection (sensitivity; MFI>15000) measured in CSI1 samples
The WHO calls for development of sensitive & specific diagnostic tools to help eliminate schistosomiasis. In #JClinMicro, researchers identify a circulating carbohydrate antigen as a highly specific and sensitive target for schistosomiasis serology. asm.social/2gj
