Got a chance to do a bit of #photogrammetry work with some Final Jomon period pottery 🏺 (~2000yrs ago) from the Sugisawa site in Shiga Prefecture using the big turntable last week. Was a nice refresher on how all the bits a pieces of the system connect together. #Japan #archaeology #Jomon #3D

One People, Two Bloodlines: What Ancient DNA Tells Us About the Jomon's Origins New mitogenome sequences from Jomon skeletons are rewriting the story of who first settled Japan — and how a single founding population fractured into two genetically distinct halves.

New ancient DNA from Jomon shell mounds in Chiba Prefecture challenges the long-standing two-migration theory. One founding population, genetic drift, and 10,000 years — enough to look like two. #Jomon #AncientDNA #HumanEvolution www.anthropology.net/p/one-people...

An early East Asian lineage with unexpectedly low Denisovan ancestry Yang et al. study Denisovan ancestry in ancient and present-day humans. In contrast to other East Asians, genomic comparisons suggest that the Jomon derived most of their ancestry from a deep lineage ...

JAPAN: “…ancient Japanese individuals from the Jomon period have the least Denisovan ancestry among individuals from Eastern Eurasia, providing evidence for an ancient East Asian lineage with little to no Denisovan ancestry.”

Black-and-white cartoon map of East Asia: silhouettes of archaic humans stand beneath a cloud with a tooth and a DNA helix that rains droplets toward Japan; a mesh sieve over the sea lets most drops fall away so only a few reach a seated Jomon hunter with spear beside cord-marked pottery and a dogū figurine, with a stilt house onshore—signaling minimal Denisovan ancestry in the Jomon.

New DNA study shows Japan’s ancient Jomon people had only trace Denisovan ancestry — suggesting limited contact with these extinct humans and refining how early East Asians spread and diversified. #AncientDNA #Jomon scientificinquirer.com/2025/10/29/d...

Experimental #archaeology revolving around pithouses has been a central focus at the site. Not only have hundreds of pithouse remains been uncovered, but the site also contains one of the only #Jomon period pithouses with preserved charred structural supports which are displayed at the museum. 🏺

The first main stop was the Goshono Site in northern Iwate prefecture. It was my first time to the site & I was thoroughly impressed. It's a large scale Middle #Jomon site dating back ~4500-4000yrs ago. Despite still not being fully excavated, they've found evidence of over 800 pithouses so far. 🏺
