January 14, 2026 Dear Mr. Franzo: Thank you for contacting me about the recent fatal shooting in Minneapolis involving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer. It is an honor to serve the people of Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, and I appreciate your thoughts on this important matter. As you may know, on January 7, 2026, an ICE agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good during a law enforcement operation. Any loss of life is tragic, and my prayers are with Ms. Good's family and loved ones as they grapple with this difficult moment. Federal agents often operate in fast-moving and dangerous environments, making split-second decisions under immense pressure. While details surrounding this incident continue to emerge, it is important that we allow the proper investigative process to unfold. Law enforcement personnel deserve the same presumption of innocence under the law as any citizen. The federal government has already opened an internal review, and I expect a full and transparent determination of what occurred and whether proper procedures were followed. Should any misconduct be found, I trust that the appropriate legal and disciplinary actions will follow. Thank you again for sharing your concerns.
