This black and white photograph shows a group of eleven children standing in front of an old, one-story schoolhouse. The building is simple with vertical siding, two windows on each side, and a central door flanked by double-hung sash windows. Above the doorway is a small porch supported by two columns, which has been removed or missing from this image.

The pupils are arranged in three rows; front row sits down while the rest stand behind them. The children appear to be between 6-12 years old and wear clothing typical of rural America during the early-to-mid twentieth century: dresses for girls and overalls, shirts, and pants or shorts for boys. Some have aprons tied around their waists.

On top of the schoolhouse roof is a bell housed in what seems to be an open belfry with an arched opening. There's also another structure on the far left, which could possibly be part of the same property but not fully visible within this frame.

The ground is dirt and shows signs of wear or use, indicative of rural conditions typical for schools during that era in less developed regions.

In the background to the right side beyond the schoolhouse stands what appears to be a wooden structure with a sloped roof. The landscape behind suggests an open plain with sparse vegetation under a clear sky.

The photo's caption reads: "Jacknife School, Gem County, Idaho." Additional information about this image can be found in Jacknife School, Gem [...]
