Bright green spring leaves show outside the window, on a nearby tree. Red curtains are arranged open, twisted to one side, to allow her view and the streaming light. Jane is a silver grey & cream orange tortoiseshell tabby. She’s a chonky senior lady of 17 years. A disco ball is above in the sash, to catch sunset rays later in the afternoon.

She wears an anxious expression, trying to convey to me that dinner time is in less than 3 hours and would I please get a move on already? Jane’s fur reflects light in a silvery outline due to her extra thick double undercoat, which also makes her coat fantastically soft to touch; softer even than cashmere. She is certain however if dinner isn’t early she will surely starve and all her fur will just fall right out. I try to reassure her but only a full dish of wet food at dinner time will placate her spurious notions.

My cat Jane The Magnificent, lounging in a half-sploot position and so relaxed she’s kind of melting over herself into the window seat where she’s reclining, on a cushioned velvet blanket with a tiger striped psychedelic pattern. The window has sheer yellow and red layers of curtains, pulled open on both sides, to reveal a grey, rainy, foggy day outside, with industrial warehouses, streets, telephone poles, wires, and the tops of trees in my front yard. The trees are just beginning to open some early spring foliage but are otherwise bare limbs. A couple of disco ball planters, a larger disco ball, and a string of disco ball lights hang in the windows, but there will be no magic hour of reflected dots today. It’s too cloudy. Jane is a silver grey tortoiseshell tabby, a chonky lady of 17 years. Unseen underneath her is a pet safe heating pad, which she loves for her old bones this time of year. Everything looks cozy and misty.

A sunny yellow window with sheer layers of red and yellow with swirled vines, which has a window seat, and a beige chaise right up next to it. The curtains are tucked between, creating sort of a tented space by the window panes, where my cat loves to sleep; hence the name “the window boudoir”. But today my cat Jane Tje Magnificent is sprawled sideways on the chaise, outside the curtains. She’s laying on her right side with paws stretching towards camera. Shapes and shadows and repeating lines and a soft rose gold light from the strong afternoon sunlight creates a cozy atmosphere. A large mirrored disco ball, two smaller disco ball planters, and a string of mini disco ball lights are suspended in the sash, over the curtains. When the afternoon light dips enough to strike the mirrored balls, it sends dots of reflected light from floor to ceiling, the time of day and an effect I refer to as “the magic hour”. It’s a little too soon yet for that today, and the clouds yet might roll back in. For now it’s a cozy, bright, late winter afternoon, with the promise of spring almost at tipping point. I put my art easel on my bed to hold my iPad, for digital art sessions, and my cat Jane The Magnificent has decided the base of it is a perfect chair to sit on.
