During AIX last week, my latest #JohnDoesJapan guide for Lonely Planet popped: a beginner's guide to using the brilliant #JapanRailPass.
Is it worth it? For most first trips to Japan, yes: mostly in pure ¥¥¥ terms, but also because it's so flexible.

Snowy view of a rural town Japanese railway station, modern in aesthetic, with corrugated metal roof and steel girders, all straight and squat. There’s a lift, at least!
The Shirayuki is a great illustration of one of the most annoying parts of the #JapanRailPass: it travels for about ten minutes along private railway ETR, who collect ¥640 (cash only!) from you at the station.
Why this can’t be included as a rounding error in the pass price continues to baffle me.
Pulled my first reservation change of the trip — I was awake early, so started my southbound journey about 90 minutes earlier than planned.
That’s one of the great things about the #JapanRailPass: just walk into any ticket office and change your reservations, for free, zero handling or refund fee.
If you fancy catching up on yesterday’s part of this #JohnDoesJapan #JapanRailPass journey up the east side of Japan, here you go!
More to come today — tagging your friends in and reposting from the thread very welcome.
Toot toot! Day 2 of my #JapanRailPass trip, and I’m off back down south again.
Sapporo, you were super cute but you need to shovel your icy damn sidewalks, what the hell.
Here’s the elevated level of Sapporo station — very much an earlier generation of architectural functionality over aesthetics.
A stack of celadon seat reservations, each about the size of a credit card. The top one reads: reserved seat ticket (Green car). Karuizawa to Omiya, today, 0856-0946, Asama 610, car 11, seat 8D. Underneath is the Japan rail pass, Green 7 days, same ticket stock.
Today I start a 7-day #JapanRailPass, in which I will be going up to Sapporo, down to Fukuoka and many places in between.
Here’s my stack of seat reservations… with record snow and wintry weather in some places, let’s see how many hold!
That’s the beauty of the pass, though: backup options…
The Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is your key to unlocking the beauty of this incredible country. In this guide, I'll delve into the benefits, eligibility, and tips for maximizing your JR Pass experience.

Exterior, JR Central N700S Shinkansen. It is mostly white with a low dark blue stripe. “N700 Supreme” is written on the side in stylised gold, with a massive S. The destination display says Hikari 648, Tokyo, Green Car in Japanese.
At Nagoya, I wanted to ride the newest Shinkansen, the N700S — but had a choice to make for Tokyo: take the Hikari (stops more, AKA the Gaijin Express because it’s the fastest Shinkansen you can take west of Tokyo with the #JapanRailPass) or wait 45 minutes for a faster Nozomi.
Interior, Japanese Limited Express train (Inaho), Green Car. Bright orange seats in a 1-2 layout face you, wth blue carpets and wide windows,
The #JapanRailPass is great, but plan carefully:
• don't plan full city days with it: these are cheap as pay-as-you-go
• note that you can't use Nozimi/Mizuho trains west of Tokyo
• Limited Express trains are a great use: unusual and varied trains to cities off the Shinkansen network
Examples of the reserved seat tickets. They are the same size as the new pass, roughly credit card sized, in a celadon colour with Japanese and English details of various trains printed on them.
I always bring (or buy) a protective wallet or card holder for my #JapanRailPass.
The protector avoids getting crumpling your pass, which stops it working in the gates.
You can also store your day's seat reservation tickets in it, which are the same size as the new smaller pass.
A plastic wallet around the size of a passport. It contains a large card with pictures of pink blossom trees and "Japan Rail Pass" on top of it. "Japan Railways Group" at the bottom is half-hidden by a reserved seat ticket for the Green Car from Tokyo to Niigata, about the size of a credit card, in a pale celadon colour, with both Japanese and English printed on it.
If you haven't been to Japan in a few years, the #JapanRailPass has changed shape: it used to be a large passport-sized affair that you had to show to staffers. Now it's a smaller ticket-sized pass that goes through the regular gates.
The pass is good for almost all JR trains within Japan.
#JohnDoesJapan tip 2: get the #JapanRailPass.
Even with the 2023 price hike, the Japan Rail Pass is still an incredible value: get it if you're doing more than Tokyo-Kyoto-Hiroshima.
I broke my thoughts down on this one for Lonely Planet last year: www.lonelyplanet.com/news/japan-r...
