Another Google Earth visit, this time to the section of the Alakanada river in northern India where Jim Corbett stalked the famous man-eater of Rudraprayag.

These views are taken near Gulabrai and Rudraprayag.
This leopard was one of the most famous man-eaters of the time, and engaged in a reign of terror from 1918 - 1926 when Mr. Corbett finally sh*t him. He was a large and particularly bold man-eater, as he would break into people’s homes to k*ll them, clawing down doors and breaking through walls.

Two terrifying stories about him:

There was an orphan boy employed to look after a flock of 40 goats. Every evening, he was given food and then shut in a small ground floor room with the goats. He slept in a small fenced in area in the corner. The master would fasten the door by a hasp which was attached by a chain, over the staple fixed in the lintel, and a piece of wood was inserted to keep the hasp in place. The boy rolled a stone against the door on his side.

Afterwards, the door showed many claw marks, and there were 40 goats packed into the small room with the boy. The leopard would have had to cross over the backs of the goats, or crawl under their bellies, to get to the boy in the corner. His master was upstairs, and Corbett is generous in hoping the boy slept through the noise and wasn’t screaming for help and being ignored.

The second story:

This all takes place in a part of India where Hindus go on pilgrimages to mountain shrines. They must walk every step barefoot. At Golabrai (where the leopard was later k*lled) was a pundit who had pilgrim shelters. One day a woman who lived in a village further down the road asked to stay there (she didn't think she could make it home before dark and the pundit gave her what he considered the safest place in the shelter, among fifty or more pilgrims. The shelter was a grass shed open on the side facing the road, and he had her sleep in front of the storage door in the very back, with rows of pilgrims between her and the road.
In the middle of the night, one of the women pilgrims screamed out, and said she'd been stung by a scorpion.
They lit a match, and saw a small scratch with a little blood.
The pilgrims griped that the woman made a big fuss about nothing, and that anyway, blood doesn't flow from a scorpion sting. They all went back to sleep.
When the pundit came from his house in the morning, he saw a sari like the local women wear lying on the road in front of the shelter, and it had blood on it. They realized that he had given his friend what he considered the safest place in the shelter, and the leopard had walked around and over 50 sleeping people, k*lled her and while carrying her body out, had scratched the woman's foot.

If I have a hero, it is Jim Corbett, and if you love terrifying true stories, as well as learning about the natural world, I cannot recommend anything more highly than his books
