His work is called science fiction, though his stories don’t fit into general labels. His best-known book is The Stainless Steel Rat, subtitled: The saga of slippery Jim DiGriz, interstellar con man and crook, which hints at his storytelling style and sense of humor. And it was Harrison who wrote the novel "Make Room! Make Room!" about the unsustainable growth of the human population of Earth even as the wealthy hoard more and more resources. The book served as the basis for the 1971 movie "Soylent Green."
