Recommended Sci Fi TV: Childhood’s End (2015) _**Recommended Sci Fi TV:** Science fiction and fantasy shows from the past decade or so that you may have missed and that we believe are worth checking out._ ### What Is It? Based on Arthur C. Clarke’s classic novel of the same name, this mini-series begins when enormous alien spacecraft appear over Earth’s major cities, and the mysterious visitors, known as the Overlords, announce that they intend to guide humanity into a new era of peace and prosperity. With war, poverty, and conflict quickly disappearing under their supervision, humanity enters what appears to be a golden age. But as the decades pass, people begin to wonder about the true motives of their alien benefactors and what their long-term plans might mean for the future of the human race. **Aired:** Syfy, 2015, 1 Season Totaling 3 Episodes **Starring:** Mike Vogel, Osy Ikhile, Daisy Betts, Yael Stone, Georgina Haig, Charles Dance **Developed By:** Matthew Graham **Bottom Line:** This mini-series sticks close to the spirit of Arthur C. Clarke’s classic novel while fleshing it out to deliver a very good sci-fi TV production that deserved more attention than it received. ### Why Is It Worth Watching? 2015 was a notable year for Syfy as they attempted to go back to their sci-fi roots after several years of putting out “genre lite” entries like **_Warehouse 13_** , **_Being Human_** , and **_Haven_**. That year saw the premieres of **_Dark Matter_** and **_Killjoys_** and also brought us the first season of **_The Expanse_**. Along with those, another notable sci-fi entry arrived—the mini-series **_Childhood’s End_** , based on the Arthur C. Clarke book—but it did not get much attention. Very early in the mini-series, we see the iconic scene where the giant spaceships appear over many of Earth’s major cities, and some longtime fans of the genre might groan: “Here we go again.” We have already seen that on television in the **_V_** mini-series from 1983 and then again in the 2009 revival, and we also saw it in 1996 with the feature film **_Independence Day_**. But Clarke was actually the first to do it with his book back in 1953, so the mini-series adaptation can’t be blamed for retreading, and that sense of familiarity you feel throughout the six-hour production comes in large part because he introduced so many concepts that have since become science fiction tropes. But give the mini-series credit for spinning the material in such a way that it does not feel like a hackneyed journey through sci-fi clichés. Instead, it updates this story about aliens arriving on Earth and wresting control from humans who are on the verge of taking their destructive nature into space. And while it takes plenty of liberties with the source material, it still sticks close to the spirit and basic premise of the book. The mini-series shortens the story from a multi-generational tale to a more compact timeframe, but that is done so that it plays better to a television audience and can maintain many of the same characters throughout its three-night run. And since character development was not a strong point of Clarke’s original book, the changes and merging of the lead players do not hamper the production and perhaps even make it stronger. I am not going into too many of the plot details because I believe **_Childhood’s End_** is best experienced as spoiler-free as possible, but I will give a warning that the first installment (the strongest of the three nights) sets up a story that does not play out quite the way you think it will. That’s the same in the book, though, because Clarke was interested in the bigger, more epic story that this eventually morphs into. But the mini-series still does a good job of expanding on the characters and fleshing out some of the ideas while never feeling padded. It did skimp on some of the details from the last section of the book, and that final scene as the Overlords depart from the planet did not quite match up to the epic feel it had in the source material when it tied everything together in a satisfying conclusion. But overall, the mini-series did quite a good job with the adaptation, even if its budget limitations were noticeable at times. I should also note the first-rate acting delivered by many of the main cast members. Mike Vogel (**_Under the Dome_** , **_Bates Motel_**) takes the lead role of Ricky Stormgren, who is changed considerably from the character in the book, but I believe for the better. The flashback sequences to his dead wife got a bit tired, though, and seemed almost pointless by the third night. Then there is Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister from **_Game of Thrones_**), who should have received Emmy consideration for his portrayal of Karellen. He plays the character as sympathetic and almost apologetic, which ties well to the plight of the Overlords that we learn about by the end of the story. Unfortunately, **_Childhood’s End_** did not deliver good ratings for Syfy, though I believe that was because many viewers were still rejecting the channel after it turned its back on its core audience when it rebranded in 2009. If it had performed better, the network might have considered doing more mini-series or movies adapting sci-fi classics, but they did not continue in that direction. This mini-series was worth the effort, though, and genre fans should certainly seek it out. ### Where Can You Watch It? The entire series has been released on DVD and Blu-ray and is still widely available in that format. You can also purchase it VOD, but it is not currently streaming on any of the major services. * * * * * * **Keep up with the status of all the current sci fi and fantasy shows as well as news and updates on new and upcoming shows atCancelledSciFi.com.** **Cancellation Watch:** Status updates and breaking news on renewals and cancellations **Sci Fi TV Highlights:** Listings for the upcoming week along with the latest sci fi TV news and trailers. **Sci Fi TV Production Report:** News on which sci fi TV shows are moving into production. **And be sure to follow us on social media:Blue Sky | Facebook | Mastodon | Twitter.**

Streaming Sci Fi TV: American Gods Is Available for Free (with Ads) on Tubi _Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest on the streaming services. Note that streaming availability can change with little to no notice._ ## What Is It? Based on the Neil Gaiman novel of the same name, _**American Gods**_ follows Shadow Moon who is released early from prison after his wife dies and who meets the mysterious character who calls himself Mr. Wednesday. He learns that the gods of old are still living in America, though mostly in squalor, and are preparing for a war with the new gods of technology, media, globalism, and more and that he will play an important part in the upcoming conflict. **Aired:** Starz, 2017-21, 3 Seasons Totaling 26 Episodes **Starring:** Ricky Whittle, Emily Browning, Crispin Glover, Bruce Langley, Yetide Badaki, Ian McShane **Created By:** Neil Gaiman, Bryan Fuller, Michael Green ## Why Watch It? _**American Gods**_ is considered one of Neil Gaiman’s greatest works, and this adaptation remains relatively faithful to the book while also adding a fair amount of material to stretch it out over multiple seasons. Bryan Fuller (_**Hannibal**_) and Michael Green (_**Logan**_)–who had both worked on the well-respected first season of _**Heroes**_ –teamed up again and delivered a visual feast across the show’s first year along with one of the strongest seasons of a sci fi/fantasy series in a long time. They took a very stylized approach, and with the help of Gaiman, fleshed out the story from the book, in my opinion improving on the original work and really delving into some of the concepts originally only touched upon. They also put together one heck of a good cast with Ian McShane as the perfect choice for Mr. Wednesday and Crispin Glover quite creepy as Mr. World along with oustanding appearances by Gillian Anderson, Orlando Bloom, Cloris Leachman, Kristin Chenoweth, and more. Unfortunately, Fuller and Green departed after the first season over “creative differences”, though they did complete over half of the episodes for the second season. The show would go through further turnover behind the scenes, but Neil Gaiman remained closely involved, holding the production together and keeping up the quality. Some felt like the second and third seasons were not as satisfying (especially with some of the changeover in cast), but I enjoyed the show throughout and thought it did an excellent job building on and expanding the source material, and they came up with some creative ways to introduce new actors into existing roles. Sadly, Starz cancelled the show right as it was reaching the climax of the book (though apparently Gaiman still had two more full seasons planned), and left it on a cliffhanger (you can read more about the cancellation at this link). The show is still worth watching, though–especially the first season–and then you can go read the book to know how the story wraps up. This one had a rather tumultuous production history and was cancelled too soon, but it stands out as an accomplishment for genre television. ### Where Is It Streaming? All three seasons are available for streaming for free (with ads) on Tubi TV. That is one of several free streaming services similar to Hulu when it first started and it has a fair amount of sci fi and fantasy TV shows and movies available. They do not currently offer a premium version without ads, but the commercial spots are not too bad on this service. _**American Gods**_ is also available on DVD and Blu-ray, and you can purchase it VOD.

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Begins on The Mandalorian Season 4, Skeleton Crew Season 2, and More _**Sci Fi TV Production Report:** Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from **Production Weekly**. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward._ **Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings for February 12th:** ## The Mandalorian Season 4 (Disney+) A fourth season of this show was announced back in 2023, but then Disney shifted its plans and decided to take the characters to the big screen. _**The Mandalorian and Grog** u_ is scheduled to hit theaters May 22nd, and now it appears that Mando and his companions will be heading back to television following that. The latest ** _Production Weekly_** listings has an entry for the fourth season of the show, though an official announcement has not been made. I am not going to look at this as a guarantee at this point, but John Favreau previously indicated that he had the scripts ready for another season prior to the movie announcement. I don’t know how much of the planned fourth season is covered in the upcoming film, if any, though I am sure there is still plenty of material to keep the show going. Ultimately, my guess is that the fourth season will be contingent on the success of the movie. If it has a good Box Office showing–which will be the expectation seeing as it gets the high profile May release date–the Mouse House will likely give the greenlight for another season of the show. If it disappoints, they may decide not to move forward with _**The Mandalorian**_ , especially considering that the show experienced a notable drop in viewership in its third year. The listing in _**Production Weekly**_ –which just came out last night and mainstream entertainment media has not reported on it yet–is likely an indication that pre-production has started. And if the movie scores a success at the Box Office, this _**Star Wars**_ spin-off will continue on the small screen. I will keep an eye out for further news related to this show, but consider the fourth season tentative at the current time. ## Skeleton Crew Season 3 (Disney+) This is another Disney+ _**Star Wars**_ entry showing up in the latest _**Product Weekly**_ listings, and it has not received an official renewal either. The first season premiered in December 2024, and the viewership was on the lower side compared to other _**Star Wars**_ live-action shows. It still performed relatively well for a streaming original, though perhaps not enough to justify its $136 million budget. It was not designated as a mini-series as Disney has been doing with many of its television entries, and the showrunners do have plans for a second season. With this one now showing up in _**Production Weekly**_ , that suggests that things are moving forward with the show, but my guess is the creative team will not have as much money to work with. I will not count it as renewed just yet, but this is a promising development for the show, and be sure to stay tuned for updates. ## Baldur’s Gate (HBO) Early development has been moving forward on this _**Dungeons & Dragons**_ video game-based series, and now it appears to be officially heading into production. The game places players in the role of a character infected with a mind flayer parasite, granting strange powers while threatening eventual transformation. As the story unfolds, players must decide whether to resist, exploit, or embrace this corruption while navigating political intrigue, ancient evils, and personal moral choices. According to _**Deadline**_, the television series will be a continuation from the _**Baldur’s Gate 3**_ game, “as the characters — old and new — are dealing with the ramifications of the events in the third game”. Craig Mazin, who co-created _**The Last of Us**_ series, will be onboard as creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner, and the show will likely be targeting a 2027 premiere. **Other genre entries from the listings for February 12th:** _**American Horror Story**_ (FX) Season 13, _**Murderbot**_ (Apple TV) Season 2 **ALSO READ: Do Sci Fi TV Shows Get Cancelled More Often than Other Genres? Streaming Sci Fi TV: Disney+ Has Plenty of Selections for Star Wars and MCU Fans _Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services. Note that these shows can be pulled from the services at any time with little notice._ The Disney+ streaming service first came on the scene in 2019, and it has put out quite a number of sci fi and fantasy scripted originals since it launched. That streamer has premiered 46 scripted originals since it began, and 32 (70%) are genre entries. And of those, you will find a lot of _**Star Wars**_ and MCU tie-in shows seeing as Disney+ has leaned heavily on those franchises. The streamer got its start with _**The Mandalorian**_ , and a fourth season of that one is currently in the works (though delayed, or perhaps put in limbo, due to the planned movie). The first MCU-related series was _**Wandavision**_ , and quite a few more have followed since that one. The streamer has experimented with a few other franchises, with _**Percy Jackson and the Olympians**_ currently headed into a second season and _**Goosebumps**_ scaring up a third year. And it has had a few one-offs like _**The Mysterious Benedict Society**_. But apart from that, most of what you will find among its slate of originals are related to two of the biggest franchises the Mouse House owns. And when it comes to its back catalog, you will find a lot of shows related to Disney properties, but there is a decent selection to sift through. Disney+ is one of the streamers that has poured a lot of money into its originals, so the production values of these are usually quite good. However, not many of the streamer’s shows stick around beyond one season. Most of the originals are considered “event series” which means that Disney+ can cancel the show if viewership is not sufficient without really cancelling it, they just claim it was always _meant_ to last one season. And while that works well for close-end shows like _**Wandavision**_ , _**The Falcon and The Winter Soldier**_ , and _**Echo**_ , it left fans of shows like _**The Book of Boba Fett**_ , _**She-Hulk: Attorney at Law**_ , and _**Willow**_ hanging (and the latter series has since been removed from streaming). Still, the “event series” approach does mean that most Disney+ shows will wrap up their main storyline after one season, though they could continue beyond that. You can subscribe to Disney+ starting at $9.99 per month for the basic plan that includes ads, and the premium, ad-free plan goes for $15.99 per month. There are also bundles that include Hulu, ESPN+, and/or HBO Max and you can see all the options at this link. Sci Fi TV Obscurities: Quark (1977) _**Sci Fi TV Obscurities:** A look at sci fi and fantasy TV shows that made it to the air only briefly before getting cast to the television wasteland._ _[Updated]_ **What Is It?** Adam Quark is the commander of United Galaxy Sanitation Patrol Cruiser which boldly travels around the galaxy with its crew of misfits . . . collecting trash. And from time to time they save humanity from imminent threats. **Aired:** NBC, 1977-78, 1 Season Totaling 8 Episodes **Starring:** Richard Benjamin, Tim Thomerson, Richard Kelton, Tricia Barnstable, Cyb Barnstable, Conrad Janis **Created By:** Buck Henry **Is It Must Watch Sci Fi?** No, but it’s a fun little sci fi romp, especially for lovers of genre television and movies from the 60’s and 70’s. **The Skinny:** The pilot for this series aired in May of 1977–just a little over two weeks prior to the debut of _**Star Wars**_ in the theaters–and offered a fun sci fi comedy that drew heavily on _**Star Trek**_ as its source of parody. A year later, NBC decided to bring it back as a series when the networks scrambled to get sci fi entries on their schedules to capitalize on _**Star Wars**_ -mania. The show was created by Buck Henry who had previously co-created the spy spoof _**Get Smart**_ with Mel Brooks back in the 1960’s. Those familiar with the humor from that show will know what to expect from _**Quark**_ , just blasted off into outer space. The series had its moments, and could be spot-on with its parody at times. But it had as many misses as hits and Buck Henry did not appear to be closely involved with the show after the pilot phase. This one has also not stood the test of time very well and could likely fall flat with modern-day viewers. But it had promise and a great cast and could have developed into a decent series if given some time and if the characters were allowed to be more than just caricatures. It’s worth a look, especially for fans of sci fi from that era. Don’t expect to find a hidden gem, and give it some leeway for dated jokes, but there are some laughs to be found from this one. **Cancelled Too Soon?** Yes. I can’t find any information for ratings from the pilot, but as mentioned above, I’m guessing the series was given the greenlight mostly as an attempt to ride on the wave of the _**Star Wars**_ phenomena. When it made it to the schedule as a weekly series in Spring of 1978, it did not find much of an audience on Friday nights and was quickly cancelled after only seven episodes were produced past the the pilot. **Should It Be Rebooted?** Not necessarily. This does not count as a classic and it never had much of a following to begin with, so there is little in the way of name recognition. But it did have a good premise to work from and current sfx technology could give them more to work with. I don’t see this getting a high priority in the reboot queue at this point, but a similar sort of sci fi spoof might be fun. **Interesting Facts:** Richard Benjamin discovered that the show was in development with Buck Henry attached after reading an issue of _**Variety**_ and requested an audition. He took a pay cut for the part because he wanted to work with Henry that much. Many of the sound effects used in the show were borrowed from _**Star Trek: The Original Series**_. **Where Can You Watch It?** The entire series has been released on DVD, but that has since gone out of print and fetches a pretty high price from third-party sellers. It is not currently available for streaming on any of the major services, but you can find episodes on YouTube from time to time. **Read More About the Show:** Wikipedia | IMDb.com **More Sci Fi TV Obscurities at This Link** * * * * * * **Keep up with the status of all the current sci fi and fantasy shows as well as news and updates on new and upcoming shows atCancelledSciFi.com.** **Cancellation Watch:** Status updates and breaking news on renewals and cancellations **Sci Fi TV Highlights:** Listings for the upcoming week along with the latest sci fi TV news and trailers. **Sci Fi TV Production Report:** News on which sci fi TV shows are moving into production. **And be sure to follow us on social media:Blue Sky | Facebook | Mastodon | Twitter.**

Cancellation Watch: Resident Alien Has a Decent Start, Andor Hits Series High, and More _**Cancellation Watch:** Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries. _ ### Status Updates **_Resident Alien_ (USA/Syfy, Status: Renewal Possible):** This series returned for its fourth season this last Friday pulling a 0.07 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 351 million total viewers on the USA Network. It also had a 0.02 score with 184 million viewers for its simulcast on Syfy. Those numbers may not look great at first glance, but for a basic cable show these days, they are actually not bad, especially considering it is airing outside of Prime Time at the 11 PM EST hour. We will see how it tracks from here, but if the show can maintain anywhere near this level, it has a shot at a fifth season renewal. **_Andor_ (Disney+, Status: Ending):** This _**Star Wars**_ entry held at Number 3 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for a second straight week, pulling in an estimated 830 million minutes of viewing. That marks a highpoint for the series in weekly viewing, but this one was planned for two seasons and could only go so far considering the events of _**Rogue One**_ which it leads into. **_The Librarians: The Next Chapter_ (TNT, Status: Renewed):** This series aired in its regular Monday 9 PM EST timeslot for the first time last week and pulled a 0.05 rating in the demo with 319 million total viewers. That is not bad for basic cable these days, and the show has already been renewed for a second season. **_SurrealEstate_ (Syfy, Status: On the Bubble):** This show wrapped up its third season last week, pulling a 0.02 rating in the demo with 165 million total viewers for its finale. Its numbers have been on the low side all season, and I have had it On the Bubble for several weeks. Fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention if they want it to continue to a fourth season. **You can keep up with the status of all the current sci fi and fantasy shows at ourCancellation Watch Page.** * * * **If you enjoy this content, consider making asmall donation to help sustain this website.** * * * ### Cancellation/Renewal Score: There were no cancellations or renewals over the last week so the score for the current season remains the same.
