An electric pump sunk in a cement pit & operated automatically furnishes the water for the pressure tank in each house. Sewage disposal is by individual septic tanks. Twelve of the units have small barns & 3[1] of them have a combination garage & chicken coop. Electricity is provided through the power lines of a private utility, & telephone service- is available to individual subscribers. A system of county roads connects the home sites with each other & with nearby highways. There are 13| acres of land devoted to roads & parks. Each homestead has an average of more than 4 acres of ground, most of which is in cultivation. The soil varies from fine sandy loam to silty clay, is gently rolling, well drained, & is adaptable to all truck crops.’ https://archive.org/stream/grangerhomestead00unit_0/grangerhomestead00unit_0_djvu.txt

Yacht pen: John Vachon photographed a group of pleasure boats in an inlet at Little Creek, Delaware, a fishing village near the state capital of Dover. Several of the sailing vessels sport tall masts. On the right of the image, a man prepares to push his boat off from a rickety dock.

Waiting by the alley: John Vachon, in the summer of 1940, captured a man with a straw hat standing along a cobblestone and brick street in Chicago, Illinois. The Father & Son clothing store where he stands borders a long alley with prominent fire escapes.

Alley ball: Two boys throw a ball in a wide brick alley in Dubuque, Iowa, in April 1940. John Vachon captured the scene, showing the alleyway lined on both sides by old buildings, garage doors, trash and parked cars and trucks. A line of electric poles borders the left side of the alley into the distance, while a small dog stands near the boys.

John Vachon’s April 1940 image probably was made at the Allegheny County Airport, which opened in the 1920s to serve the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, region. In this image, Vachon captured people, including children, waiting outside a fence separating them from a twin-engine passenger plane on the taxiway. The plane bears a TWA logo, representing Transcontinental & Western Air. Howard Hughes owned the airline in 1940.

Home alone: On assignment in North Dakota in October 1940, John Vachon made a black-and-white photograph of an abandoned farm house in Ward County. The clapboard dwelling, at the left in the frame, has no windows but several signs, including one for Orange Crush. To the right are four spindly trees under a threatening sky.

Fine dining: John Vachon photographed this storefront lunchroom in Newport News, Virginia, in November 1937. “Busy Bee Lunch” is painted on the glass in the door, while “Big John’s Place” is the name on the dirty windows. There is a small “Curb Service” sign, and two men wearing newsboy caps are sitting on the stoop on one side of the facade. On the sidewalk on the other side sits a cat.
