Nightfall
My tribute to one of my favourites. I painted him but it it didn’t look that great so I imposed him on one of his own paintings. #JosefHerman #British #Polish #Artist #ExpressionistPainter
Two chunkily drawn characters walk toward us hand-in-hand, one wearing skirt and headscarf carrying a child, the other wearing trousers with patches (or maybe holes?) on the knees, a poncho and a hat. It is difficult to make out their features as they have been painted darkly against a rusty, sparse background of mountains and red-roofed buildings. Maybe it's dusk? Or dawn? Where are they going at this time of day with a kid to carry? Have they just been forced to leave that village behind them? They don't have any bags, so they've got whatever they're wearing and nowt else. Do they have anywhere to go? They don't look happy, but they do look strong. I hope they're okay.
I bloody love Josef Hermann's work, me. Remind me to do a thread of it on #MayDay, or during #DurhamMinersGala.
