Am 25. Mai 2025 jährte sich der Tod von George Floyd zum fünften Mal, ein Ereignis, das weltweit Proteste gegen Polizeigewalt und Rassismus auslöste. Doch fünf Jahre später steht die Bewegung „Black Lives Matter“ (BLM) vor erheblichen Rückschlägen, insbesondere durch politische Entscheidungen der Trump-Administration. Seit Donald Trumps Rückkehr ins Weiße Haus im Januar 2025 wurden zahlreiche Reformen rückgängig gemacht, die nach Floyds Tod eingeführt wurden. Die Regierung beendete Bundesaufsichtsmaßnahmen über Polizeibehörden in Minneapolis und Louisville, die nach den Tötungen von George Floyd und Breonna Taylor eingerichtet worden waren. Zudem wurden Diversity-, Equity- und Inclusion-Programme (DEI) auf Bundesebene eingestellt und lokale Behörden unter Druck gesetzt, ähnliche Maßnahmen zu machen. Ein besonders kontroverser Schritt war die Rücknahme der Executive Order 14074, die unter Präsident Biden eingeführt wurde, um Polizeipraktiken zu reformieren und die Rechenschaftspflicht zu stärken. Diese Entwicklungen haben bei Bürgerrechtsaktivisten Besorgnis ausgelöst. Trotz dieser Rückschläge setzen sich Aktivisten weiterhin für Veränderungen ein. In Minneapolis und Houston fanden Gedenkveranstaltungen statt, bei denen unter anderem Reverend Al Sharpton sprach und die Notwendigkeit betonte, den Kampf für Gerechtigkeit fortzusetzen. Minnesotas Generalstaatsanwalt Keith Ellison warnte vor möglichen Provokationen durch die Trump-Regierung, die darauf abzielen könnten, Unruhen zu schüren und autoritäre Maßnahmen zu rechtfertigen. Die öffentliche Unterstützung für BLM ist seit 2020 gesunken. Laut einer Pew-Umfrage glauben 72 % der US-Amerikaner, dass die verstärkte Aufmerksamkeit für Rassengerechtigkeit nach Floyds Tod wenig zur Verbesserung der Lebensbedingungen von Schwarzen beigetragen hat. Die Bewegung wurde von konservativen Kräften als radikal dargestellt, was zu einem Rückgang der Unterstützung für die Demokratische Partei in bestimmten Wählergruppen führte.
