Another great #KZOOicms in the books! Caught up with friends, colleagues, and students; gave away 50 free introductory MAA memberships; gave a paper on the state of discoverability of medieval mss in U.S. collections; & took part in a panel about teaching with fragments. Also karaoke. I need a nap.
Only THREE left! Stop by Saturday to get'em while they last! #kzooicms #medievalsky

Page from a reading primer. Text on the page reads: "Let me go and see the cat and the dog to-day. That man has got a fig. Go and ask him for it. That lad has got an eel." There is a b&w line drawing/etching showing the things in the reading, including a boy holding an eel in his right hand. His left hand is on his hip, and his legs are thin and reedy. His stance says that he is defiant, but also that he's ready to make his escape if things go badly. This lad isn't giving up his eel, even for a man with a fig. In the distance is a house; we can assume that the lad lives there, and that it is completely full of eel skins and skeletons. The standoff between the man & boy feels like an old west shootout. The sky is heavy with dark doubt, & the grass in the foreground is bending to a breeze. There's a storm coming. The dog, which is bounding between the man & boy: a grim harbinger of ill weather. There is surely a cat in the picture, but I can't find it. Isn't that just like a cat?
I'm at #kzooicms today, If you'll be there, come visit me in the vendor's hall. I'll be the guy showing off maps you can't buy, enticing you to buy maps that don't exist yet!
But I'll not leave you eel-less today! Enjoy this page from Mrs. Sherwood's 1822 primer!

An inviting looking table, set before a bright window. A white table runner reads “Surprised Eel Mapping” around a compass rose with an eel in the middle. Around the table are various maps, and the table itself is laden with books (containing maps!) and folders with even more maps. There are business with eels on them. You’ve never seen a table with more maps and eels in your life.
Are you a medievalist at @kzooicms.bsky.social with a book to pitch, but no maps to make it shine?
Or…do you need maps for an article? A long-running TTRPG? Decoration? Stop by my booth in the exhibitors hall!
Surprised Eel Mapping! The only maps with eels!

For #Kzoo2024 attendees who drink or enjoy bars, I learned from the Waldo’s bartender that they got very little conference traffic last year. It’s a fun, slightly divey bar, and it doesn’t have a lot of students around this time of year. #KzooICMS
(Also, they have $7.75 cocktail pitchers tomorrow.)
