Isinet residents get reliable water from solarised borehole Over 2,000 people in Isinet town, Kajiado South constituency, now have reliable access to water after the commissioning of the Isinet borehole solarisation project by Kajiado County Governor Joseph ole Lenku. The solarisation project, which was funded by the Financing Locally Led Climate Action Programme, Kenya (FLLoCA) programme, will ensure that the community will access a cost-effective and environmentally friendly water supply system. The borehole, which has been a vital source of water for Isinet residents, was drilled by the Kajiado County government, but the high cost of electricity to pump water posed a significant challenge. Speaking while commissioning the solarised borehole, Governor Lenku noted that the project was a major milestone in enhancing water accessibility, sustainability, and infrastructure security for the Isinet community as his administration works towards one of his legacy aspirations of livable towns. “We promised Kajiado residents a suitable environment for both residential living and business activities as outlined in the livable towns initiative, and connecting them with water is one of the steps towards achieving this,” said Governor Lenku. The governor also remarked that the population in Isinet town has grown and the Isinet market currently under construction is at a 60 per cent completion level, thus the need for enhanced water accessibility. He revealed that the project includes the extension of water pipelines to neighbouring communities such as Namelok and fencing of the borehole site to enhance security and safeguard the infrastructure. The borehole will also serve two schools and Isinet Dispensary. **By Diana Meneto** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Kenya receives Sh 360M rice donation from China The Government has received rice donations worth Sh360 Million from the People’s Republic of China to be distributed to over 2.8 million people in 23 Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) Counties. The donation aims at boosting food security in the ASAL counties facing increased vulnerability of ecosystems and livelihoods due to the below normal March-May and April to June expected rainfall. The deteriorating outlook is also linked to the fragile recovery from the 2021–2023 drought, following five consecutive failed rain seasons. Speaking in Kumpa, Kajiado Central during the launch of the food donations, Cabinet Secretary for East African Community (EAC), Arid and Semi-Arid Lands & Regional Development, Beatrice Askul emphasized the importance of building resilience among communities to be able to cope with the adverse effects of climate change. The CS urged communities in ASAL counties to embrace alternative sources of livelihoods to be able to cushion themselves during long periods of drought. “We have received 40,000 bags of rice to assist communities in ASAL areas who are facing drought due to below normal rainfall in the counties; even as we do so, we are emphasizing on embracing alternative sources of livelihoods,” she said. Askul thanked the Chinese government for standing with Kenya whenever the country faces challenges, particularly those related to disasters. She further underscored the need to leverage financial and technical support from development partners to enhance food security, build resilience, and improve livelihoods. On his part, Principal Secretary ASAL and Regional Development Mr. Kello Harsama reiterated the importance of building resilience within communities, adding that the Ministry has embarked on resilience programmes such as sinking boreholes and building dams in ASAL counties to enable locals to embark on food production. Harsama noted that ASAL counties are normally worst affected during long periods of drought, and building resilience early will enable the communities to cushion themselves from the effects of climate change. “We have embarked on resilience programmes including building dams and sinking boreholes in ASAL counties to enable residents to grow crops that will boost food security. We are investing heavily in water and smart agriculture and pastoralism to enable communities to cope with drought,” he said. Minister Counselor Mr. Zhou Zhencheng, from the People’s Republic of China affirmed his country’s support to Kenya adding that the bilateral relations between the two countries have expanded in many areas including social economic development. “The People’s Republic of China will continue supporting Kenya during such tough times as drought or floods as the two countries enjoy mutual bilateral relations,” said Zhencheng. **By Rop Janet** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Inua Jamii beneficiaries laud government for enabling easy access to funds
Inua Jamii beneficiaries in Ngong, Kajiado North constituency have lauded the government for ensuring they can access their funds in an easy, fast and convenient way.

While addressing the media in Ngong, the elderly persons said that since the government introduced the payment of the funds through E-Citizen, they are able to save on transportation costs which they would have used to access the banks.

“We used to travel for long distances to access the banks in addition to spending the money on transport but we thank the government for introducing E-Citizen which makes access to funds easier as MPESA agents are everywhere,” said Ann Njoki, a beneficiary.

Another beneficiary, Agnes Maina said that due to health complications, she is not able to travel for long distances to access the funds in the bank and has had to depend on her caregiver but she is now thankful that the funds are easily accessible.

Principal Secretary for Social Protection Joseph Motari, who conducted spot checks at Ngong to monitor the ongoing Inua Jamii cash transfer payments also reiterated that the new payment will enable the beneficiaries to access their payments in a more convenient way.

“The president, Dr. William Ruto directed us to ensure that the elderly are paid through their mobile phones. In some cases, the elderly used the 1,000 shillings for transport thus remaining with only 1,000 shillings and that is why the president said that they be paid via MPESA and E-Citizen platforms,” said PS Motari.

He emphasised that the Government remains committed to ensuring the seamless disbursement of cash transfers to enhance the well-being of vulnerable citizens.

Earlier this week, the State Department for Social Protection disbursed Sh 3.52 billion to 1,760,074 beneficiaries under the Inua Jamii programme for the January 2025 payment cycle. Payments commenced on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, with each beneficiary receiving Sh 2,000.

The government is transitioning Inua Jamii payments from bank accounts to MPESA agents via the E-Citizen to enhance service delivery.

The move was necessary to make the payments closer, easier and faster through the wide network of MPESA agents.

The pilot phase began in November 2024 in Murang’a and Marsabit counties. The funds can be accessed through the MPESA platform via E-Citizen by dialing *222#.

Beneficiaries or caregivers may visit any MPESA agent with their national ID to withdraw the full amount without transaction charges, or transfer the funds to their MPESA wallets for flexible use.

Those without registered Safaricom lines are required to purchase one, have it registered with their Identity Cards and activate MPESA.

Though MPESA agents are not usually allowed to register a line if anyone is 60 years and above, Safaricom has made an exception for Inua Jamii beneficiaries or caregivers whose Identity cards have been validated by Safaricom.

By Diana Meneto

<a class="share-email-popup" href='mailto:?subject=Please visit this link https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/inua-jamii-beneficiaries-laud-government-for-enabling-easy-access-to-funds/&body=Hey Buddy!, I found this information for you: "Inua%20Jamii%20beneficiaries%20laud%20government%20for%20enabling%20easy%20access%20to%20funds".
