She imagined herself in 10 yrs, still running the office for a ghost. She wanted to ask #Smiley what to do, but found he had slipped away.

One of 2024’s biggest surprises was @harkaway.bsky.social picking up his father’s pen and writing a new adventure for British institution, #GeorgeSmiley. #KarlasChoice is the result and it’s like visiting an old and cherished friend.

John #LeCarréthon continues. Finished #ASmallTownInGermany podcasts ongoing… interesting to hear a TV adaptation being talked about. Could be quite relevant now. Doing all the books (mostly) in order the next natural step will be #KarlasChoice as it fits nicely in the timeline 👌
The literary world is glad that #GeorgeSmiley is back thanks to his son Nick Harkaway and his excellent reboot novel #KarlasChoice. Seems like a good time to revisit the start of it all #CallForTheDead by John le Carre narrated by Michael Jayston

This book arrived today! It’s my first book for the new year. Can’t wait to start reading it on Wednesday. #KarlasChoice #NickHarkaway
In a conversation with Ben Okri, years ago now, Marcus du Sautoy described how a good mathematical proof works: it takes you from the familiar, then explains each steps as you travel to somewhere completely new and different. #KarlasChoice does that, with very human, unpredictable characters.
I’ve just tried to summarise and explain the plot to my wife but it defies retelling. You have to read #KarlasChoice, to walk beside the characters and listen to their thoughts and stories, to understand how and why it ends the way it does. This isn’t just an homage to Le Carré; it stands on its own
Now that I’ve finished #KarlasChoice by @harkaway.bsky.social, I can tell you how bloody good it is. Sleepless with pain from my recent knee replacement, I was up with it until 5 this morning. And I found myself begrudging every word as the end approached but needing to reach its conclusion.
Bring your own drawing pin and yellow chalk. Tonight in Hampstead. @harkaway.bsky.social will be interviewed by @shippersunbound.bsky.social of the Sunday Times at Waterstones Hampstead.

Superb session with @harkaway.bsky.social at the lovely @waterstones in Chichester - an excellent interviewee for #KarlasChoice
Here we are @WaterstonesChi - with Nick Harkaway for #KarlasChoice !
In Smiley’s experience, the narrow window of action lived in the delay between your first movement and your enemy’s comprehension of the choice. Once they knew what you were doing, you needed to have done it and be doing something else.

@harkaway.bsky.social has donè his dad proud. My review of Karla's Choice. Good to have you back again, George Smiley 💙📚 #KarlasChoice #books #bookreviews whatcathyreadnext.co.uk/2024/11/18/b...
It wasn’t that he didn’t understand mood and body language. His own use of it was striking. The person he was outside a room vanished as soon as he got inside and understood the flow and priority around him, so that he instantly fitted himself to whatever shape was most acceptable…

The key to getting any kind of traction with Control lay in recognising the absence of words not as a prelude but as the meeting in itself, and making him say what he wanted to say.
#KarlasChoice
(Good advice, George - never feel forced to fill silence in a meeting or, worse, an interview.)
‘George can handle Róka for me. He owes us that much.’
Yes, Smiley thought, that’s it exactly. I served you for twenty-five years and more, but all that creates is a greater obligation to keep going. The salamander lives in the fire because it has forgotten how to live any other way.

This was the man, she realised, she had been brought to meet. The one who would put it all right.
…
This in other words was one of England’s secret chiefs, bathed in power. Here in his office, she thought, he looked less like a janitor and more like a greengrocer.
#KarlasChoice
…afterwards a figure she took to be a doorman or a janitor: a stout, hurried little man with pouch cheeks and thick-framed spectacles who opened her door and put out his hand to lift her up out of the car. She judged he was wearing a second hand suit. It was well-made but not for him.

‘And what about you? What will you do?’
‘I am destined for moderate things. I find the prospect enchanting.’

New Review - today on the blog I am on the blog tour for #KarlasChoice a novel by Nick Harkaway where George Smiley returns into a fascinating Cold War thriller - I highly recommend it! www.runalongtheshelves.net/blog/2024/11...
I liked #KarlasChoice a lot. The #audible presentation was really well done. A joy to read over the weekend.
I’ve started reading #KarlasChoice. Cue a long family discussion over coffee about where Smiley, Alleline and Haydon went to school.
Dad: I bet Alleline and Haydon went to Eton
Me: Maybe Haydon, but not Percy and he’s still sore about it.

#KarlasChoice is available. It’s been a long time since I’ve wanted to take the day off work because I’m excited to read a #book.
