Sa Sainteté le 17ième Karmapa fut le premier lama réincarné au Tibet, bien avant les Dalaï Lamas. Il est le détenteur, avec son fils de cœur, le Shamarpa, des enseignements, transmissions, initiations de la lignée Karma Kagyu du bouddhisme tibétain, l'une des 4 principales lignées avec les Gelugpas (Dalaï Lama, portés sur la connaissance et la discipline), les Nyigmapa (Gourou Rinpoché, les Anciens) et les Shakyapa. Toutes les autres lignées sont ici de celles-ci. La lignée Karma Kagyu porte l'attention sur la transmission directe, de cœur à cœur et la pratique de la méditation. Il y a plus de 800 centres en Occident. Son siège européen est Dhagpo Kagyu Ling en Dordogne, France, guidée spirituellement par Lama Jigmé Rinpoché.
