Italy secured the possession of #Kastellorizo through the Italian-Turkish Convention in 1932 and fought back British Commandos who tried to take over the island in February 1941 (#OpAbsention).
In 1921, the Treaty of Sevres assigned #Kastellorizo to Italy and shortly after the Treaty of Lausanne confirmed the Italian claim of ownership over the island. As such, #Castelrosso became part of the Isole Italiane dell'Egeo.
The population of #Kastellorizo continued its efforts for liberation from the #Ottomans in the years following the #LibyanWar in 1912. That was eventually achieved in #WWI when #French forces occupied the island.
During the Greek War of Independence in 1821, the islanders fought valiantly with their boats alongside the rest of their Greek brethren but did not manage to be included within the borders of the young Greek state in 1831. #Kastellorizo
In the years that followed, the people of #Kastellorizo bid their time and turned their attention to their flourishing trade operations. Their small island went through a great period of growth and was boasting a population of 12,000 by 1905.
Soon after, Alfonso V of Aragon, King of Naples, conquered it and rebuilt its castle. The island remained part of the Crown of Aragon until 1512 when the #Ottoman Sultan Suleiman I assumed its possession. #Kastellorizo then passed to Venice till 1659 when the Ottomans came back.
The Knights Hospitaller, a medieval #Catholic military order, conquered Kastellorizo in 1306AD as part of their expedition to take #Rhodes, which became the capital of the Crusader State. In 1440AD, an Egyptian Sultan occupied the island and enslaved its population. #Kastellorizo
Colonised first by Dorian and later by Rhodian Greeks, by 350BC #Kastellorizo was already a centre of international trade due to its port’s proximity to the #Gulf and #Egypt. This development continued in the Roman and Byzantine era.
