Ministry of Energy leads tree planting exercise in Kericho The Ministry of Energy and Petroleum has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental restoration and sustainability by aligning with the President’s call to plant trees as part of the country’s ambitious target of growing 15 billion trees over the next 10 years. The Principal Secretary, Administration, Ministry of Energy and Petroleum, Allan Machari, who led the exercise at Tionosoyiet wetlands in Kericho County, said the Ministry, through its state departments and agencies, had planted over 13 million seedlings and was aiming at meeting its 105 million trees per year target. Representing Energy Cabinet Secretary, Opiyo Wandayi, Machari outlined the Ministry’s extensive tree planting efforts, particularly in regions such as Narasha, Koibatek, and Londiani forests in Baringo and Kericho counties. In addition to Londiani Forest, the Ministry has focused on restoring key wetlands such as Tionosoyiet and Kuje in Ainamoi and Sigowet Sub-Counties of Kericho. Machari said other than Londiani Forest, the Ministry adopted Tionosoiyet and Kuje wetlands in Ainamoi and Sigowet Sub-Counties in Kericho County and was committed to ensure trees were planted and taken care of to maturity. “To achieve the set targets, the Ministry cannot do it alone. The involvement of public and private sector leaders and local communities is important. The environmental rehabilitation and restoration initiative anticipates that everyone living in Kenya will plant 30 trees in the next 10 years,” said Mr. Machari. He urged the local community to protect water sources, curb illegal logging, and adopt better waste disposal practices to ensure conservation of the region’s natural resources. “The Ministry is committed to increasing power connectivity to communities, enhancing the use of clean renewable and safe energy sources and championing environmental conservation initiatives,” he remarked. Kericho County Commissioner, Gilbert Kitiyo, warned scrap metal dealers who exploited street children to vandalize electricity infrastructure, warning that those engaged in such activities would face the full force of the law. Kitiyo encouraged residents to continue planting trees within their homes, schools, churches, and places of work, saying that these efforts would benefit both the community and future generations. Kericho County Forest Conservator, John Kidogo, said 600 indigenous tree seedlings were planted along the riverbanks of Tionosoyiet Wetlands. Kidogo said 1.4 million seedlings had been planted since 2024, with a target of planting 8 million seedlings in 2025. **By Kibe Mburu** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Kericho Governor prioritizes healthcare workers’ welfare Kericho Governor Dr. Eric Mutai has vowed to improve healthcare workers’ conditions by among other actions addressing the prevailing shortage of medical staff in the county. Governor Mutai expressed deep concern over doctors’ mental health struggles caused by overwork, low pay, and lack of insurance. “We have heard some doctors lose their minds and fall into depression due to lack of insurance, insufficient pay, and overworking. Yet, when they attend village functions, people still say, ‘Karibu Daktari,” he remarked. Speaking during the confirmation of 556 healthcare workers to permanent and pensionable terms at Kiprugut Chumo Stadium Monday, Dr. Mutai commended their resilience, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic and assured them that their sacrifices would no longer go unrecognized. “You have my respect, and support. From now on, you will only work the hours assigned to you. In return, I ask that you be available for the people of Kericho with an end to non-responsiveness and careless handling of patients,” Dr Mutai stated. To address the healthcare workers’ shortage, the county government has announced 136 new job vacancies aimed at strengthening service delivery in public hospitals across Ainamoi, Soin-Sigowet, Belgut, Kipkelion East, Kipkelion West, and Bureti sub-counties. Governor Mutai also committed to deploying at least two doctors per dispensary and increasing medical supplies to improve healthcare access and quality as he directed the Health CEC Dr. David Ekwam to enhance supervision. Additionally, the Governor encouraged healthcare workers to secure their financial future by joining Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) and enrolling with the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme, dismissing those opposing it. “They are rejecting SHA because they want to continue misusing NHIF funds for personal gain,” he declared. On his part Dr. Ekwam assured the 236 healthcare workers still on contract that they, too, would be confirmed soon and also announced the upcoming launch of a Sh328 million cancer center, which will create job opportunities for young healthcare professionals in Kericho and beyond. “For those whose careers were held back due to contract terms, we inform you that soon, you will be free to further your studies and return for better opportunities,” the health CECM said. One of the confirmed healthcare workers, Hillary Cheruiyot, expressed gratitude for the permanent employment terms, calling it a long-awaited victory. “Thank you, Governor Dr. Eric Mutai, for making this a reality. It is not just our personal victory but also a recognition of our contribution to the community,” Cheruiyot reiterated. Governor Mutai further announced the on course Kericho’s major healthcare infrastructure projects including the Sh358 million Non-Communicable Disease Centre at Kericho Referral Hospital, Sh158 million Sosiot Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Unit, Sh 58 million Cheborge Health Centre, and the Sh55 million Kunyak Health Centre project. Additionally, he said the replacement of asbestos roofing in health facilities to improve safety standards was ongoing. To strengthen the workforce, the County Government has pledged to promote over 500 healthcare staff across various sectors this year with Governor Mutai explaining the need for a well-motivated workforce in achieving universal healthcare. “A healthy workforce means better services for our people. We will continue to prioritize staff welfare and promotions,” he assured. The Governor reiterated that his administration was fully committed to delivering quality healthcare services adding: “Together, we are building a healthier, more resilient, and thriving Kericho County, and call for unity and dedication to ensure better healthcare for all residents,” he declared. **By Gilbert Mutai and Happiness Tanui** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Experts call for action in tackling teenage pregnancies in Kericho According to the latest Kenya Demographic and Health Survey (KDHS), Kericho County teenage pregnancy rate stands at 21% among vulnerable young girls, especially those with lower education levels, which is significantly higher than the national average of 15%. Bomet County is at 24 percent, Kajiado (20), Nandi (16), while Uasin Gishu county is at 22 percent in teenage pregnancies. Speaking in Kericho hotel, Janet Lunayo from the National Council for Population and Development (NCPD) emphasized the need for collective action in the fight against GBV, which is also linked to rise in teenage pregnancies. “Teenage pregnancy is not just a health issue; it also affects education, economic progress and the overall well-being of young girls. When a girl becomes pregnant at a young age, her future is often compromised,” Lunayo stated. The NCPD official said that among those with no formal education, 38% of them have experienced pregnancy, while the rate drops to 5% for those with education beyond secondary school. “There is a direct link between teenage pregnancy and HIV infections, with adolescent mothers facing a higher risk of contracting HIV due to limited access to reproductive health services and increased vulnerability to sexual exploitation. These statistics show that young women account for a significant percentage of new HIV cases in the country,” she noted. “Gender-based violence, GBV, remains a pressing concern, with nearly half of survivors in Kericho not seeking help or reporting abuse. Data reveals that 45% of women in the county believe that wife-beating is sometimes justified, reflecting deep-rooted cultural attitudes that make it harder for survivors to come forward,” she observed. Lunayo urged policymakers to invest in education, healthcare, and community outreach programs to curb teenage pregnancies and break the cycle of HIV and GBV. “We need to empower young girls with knowledge and resources to make informed decisions about their health and future,” Lunayo emphasized. The Kericho County Director of Healthcare Dr. Betty Lang’at noted that the triple threat happens mostly outside hospitals, making prevention and community engagement critical. “Gender-based violence plays a significant role in teenage pregnancies. Many girls do not get pregnant by choice, but because of coercion, abuse, and lack of awareness about their rights,” she said. The family planning methods remain a challenge; despite progress in contraceptive use, 63% of married women in Kenya use some form of contraception, while only 57% rely on modern methods such as injectables, implants and pills, added Dr. Langat. “In Kericho, the unmet need for family planning stands at 17%, indicating gaps in access to reproductive health services,” she remarked. Meanwhile, health officials and community leaders are being called upon to strengthen policies that protect adolescent girls. As the crisis deepens, targeted interventions are crucial to ensuring a safer, healthier future for young women in Kericho and beyond. **By Dominic Cheres and Collins Bett** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail
