Is there really only one hour left to a campaign that was some 16 months in the making?
Unless there’s a last minute flurry of activity we can say that this campaign raised just under five figures with 243 backers.
That’s 275% of our initial goal! #Letsgo

Hey everyone! It’s my turn to take over the Kids Comics Studio Anthology account. Thanks for the warm welcome - and don’t forget to support the anthology on Kickstarter! I’d like to talk about the process for creating my story, The Quha Gardens. I've talked about it during our Kickstarter pre-launch party (and of course, on my Substack) but this is the first time I've laid out the entire timeline in one post. Creating the submission (June-September) The first phase was submitting my pencilled pages and 1 finished, colored page by the first due date (September 15, 2024). I spent most of this time writing the outline and the script - about 2 months (June and July). This took a lot longer than expected, thanks to my perfectionist voice that kept pushing me to make everything perfect. But I have great critique partners who told me when the script was as done as it needed to be, and I was ready to move on to thumbnails. It was a powerful permission slip, giving me just what I needed to go forward. I spent most of August working on thumbnails, which I often ran by my critique partners as a sanity check. This step went by faster - about 3+ weeks. From the end of August to early September I worked on pencils. This step went more quickly since the hard decisions were behind me, but it still left me with only a couple of days to ink and color page 1. I spent a day and a half on inks and only a few hours applying flat colors (without shading or highlights). It was my fastest effort yet - good enough to get my submission in on time! A few weeks later, a critique partner said she’d enjoyed watching the pages develop and suggested I write about my process. Believe it or not, I hadn’t assumed anyone would be interested, but her encouragement was a big permission slip to open up - and finally start my Substack!
In October I received feedback from the anthology‘s editorial team and started working on revisions, which were due on January 15, 2025. There was a key narrative point in my story that the editorial team suggested revising. It was a great idea that wound up consuming most of my time (2 months, from mid-October to early December). I leaned heavily on my critique partners, sending them sketch after sketch and getting their input on how to tell a complex story in a single panel. From there, I spent the last month of this step inking. It look a little longer than I expected - I had to fill in a lot of gaps in my loose pencils - but at least I hadn’t overworked my pencils like I had overworked my outline. All that was left was coloring. I thought I had plenty of time (over 2 months) until the March 21 due date. I was mistaken! I spent most of the time (about 1 1/2 months) searching for the right palettes for two key elements: the Quha (life energy) and the gardens where the story takes place. I sent my critique partners dozens of value studies and color tests. In addition to their feedback, I got great lessons on how to balance dark vs. light values and high vs. low intensity colors. It felt like a huge win when I discovered palettes that I liked. At the end of February, I started adding flat colors, spending over 2 weeks (about 3-5 days per page). I spent the last week adding highlights and shadows, giving the art a three-dimensional look. This step went by the most quickly but I was still counting the days until the due date! Conclusion It’s hard to believe the story was finished over a month ago and the Kickstarter campaign is in full swing (and fully funded - thank you!). It's been a complete experience, full of inspiring, enlightening, exhausting, and terrifying moments. I learned to tell a story in a few pages but still fill it with heart and meaning; grown more comfortable working under deadline and letting go sooner; and above all, bringing in critique part…

"Hi there! I’m Ashlee, half of Team WagWorksGA. I work with my husband and creative partner, Geoff, to make kids comics, graphic novels, and lots of other fun stuff! Geoff is a talented digital artist and I’m the writer, but we don’t always stick to those roles exactly. People often ask how Geoff and I work together to create comics, or they may ask how one exactly “writes” comics (since they’re pictures). In celebration of our comic, Roll Initiative, featured in KCU’s first ever Anthology🎉, I thought I’d share a bit of our process. Early in 2024, Janna initiated the Anthology with a call for interest. Around this time, our family joined a Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) campaign at our local library. Geoff was taken by the role playing and infinite possibilities, which inspired his loose idea for our short story comic. I believe he summarized it something like this in spring 2024: We should have a main character who goes back and forth between their reality and their imaginative, stronger, braver personality from their role-playing game. It took until about mid-summer for me to sit down with the idea - life is crazy and hectic, so creative projects don’t move forward as quickly as we’d like them to! By this point, I had a rough idea of our main character’s personality. I also knew that we needed an antagonist, and that a special friend would come in at the end of the story. So, I poured over the D&D Players Handbook descriptions to see which race would fit our characters best, which tools they could carry, and so on." There's a picture of some hand written notes, pencil and eraser lying on an open D&D Players Handbook.
Next, I grabbed some scratch paper and folded it a few times to make rough panel lines and then started on some thumbnails. [A picture of a couple pages of sketched out panels for a comic with the ones near the end more written words] By the end of my brainstorming, my arm got tired from sketching (tendonitis and carpal tunnel suck), so I resorted to very minimal descriptions for the final panels - this is why Geoff’s the artist! From there, Geoff worked his artistic magic! 🪄 When the book comes out, you'll be able to see just how much changed from these initial rough thumbnails: from panel shapes and sizes to layouts, and even the title! It was a fun and educational process, and we're glad we said YES! to joining the Anthology Project!
[A picture of two fantasy comic characters giving each other a high five with a boom sound effect. One looks to be wearing armor and the other looks to be an elf.] We are so thankful to be part of the creative, talented, and inspiring team that made Let’s Go possible. We’ve forged friendships through the fires, learned so much, and gained a bit of confidence in the process together. ➡️Check out KCU’s supa-dupa-fully-funded-campaign-that you can still back on Kickstarter - Let’s Go! ⬅️ 💛Ashlee
