🌋The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory reported on Tuesday that preliminary models suggest the likely forecast window for the onset of episode 43 lava fountaining is March 2nd to 14th. “Additional data are needed to narrow down the forecast window,” the Observatory added.

The #USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says episode 42 is forecast to begin between February 12 & 15, based on current models of summit deformation. Summit inflation switched to deflation Monday morning, and deflation continued until just before noon on Tuesday.

Forecasting models suggest the window for episode 40 is between January 8 and 14, with one model showing as late as January 16.
Kīlauea has been erupting episodically since December 23, 2024, primarily from two vents (north and south) in Halema‘uma‘u.

Lava overflows at the Kīlauea summit vents ended early Thursday morning, suggesting a delay in the start of the high fountaining phase of episode 36, per #USGS #HVO.
Models ssuggest the likely forecast window for anticipated high lava fountains is btwn now & November 11th.

Episode 35 lava fountaining is likely to begin between October 17 and 22, 2025, with the most likely dates being between October 18 and 20.
The onset of episode 35 lava fountaining may occur sooner if rates of inflation and precursory activity increase.

Episode 29 was “certainly different”, scientists with the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory noted. The usual “nozzle” like shape of the vent exit broke down early in the episode, the Observatory wrote, “allowing lava to spray in multiple directions.

The north vent stopped erupting at approximately 1:20 p.m. HST, marking the end of the episode. The south vent did not appear to activate at all during this episode and has been completely covered by new deposits. The cone is growing around the north vent.

Summit inflation continues at this time, along with persistent, low-level seismic tremor. Incandescent glow has been visible at the north vent in overnight webcam views, as well as intermittent minor lava spattering and jetting.

On Tuesday, the University of Hawaiʻi released video of an interview with Steven Lundblad, a geology professor at UH Hilo. Lundblad provided some insights into why the volcano has settled into this eruptive pattern, and how scientists are working to learn more.

Kīlauea’s current eruption in Halemaʻumaʻu crater within Kaluapele began on December 23, 2024. There have now been 19 episodes separated by pauses in activity. All eruptive activity remains within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. Glow was visible in N & S vents overnight.
