The #USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory says episode 42 is forecast to begin between February 12 & 15, based on current models of summit deformation. Summit inflation switched to deflation Monday morning, and deflation continued until just before noon on Tuesday.

Well THIS was rather breathtaking: Local photographer and videographer Kawika Singson captured this video of the Hawaiian endemic nēnē at Hawaiʻi Volcanoes NP as lava cascaded skyward behind them. We are bedazzled.

Despite the popularity of “Wicked” lately, we’re talking about the tornado- or whirlwind-like phenomenon that has shown up frequently over the past year of eruptive episodes at #Kīlauea’s summit.
Twisters? Tornadoes? Whirlwinds? Lava-nadoes? Vol-nadoes? Tephra-nadoes?

Mahalo nui loa to NPS V.I.P. photog Janice Wei, who posted these side by side shots of the before/after landscape of the caldera of #Kīlauea Volcano.

In just 1 year, 38 episodes of eruption have reshaped Halemaʻumaʻu Crater.

“Models suggest the onset of episode 38 fountains will occur between December 6 and 9, based on ground deformation models,” the USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory stated.

The most likely window for start of episode 37 is between tomorrow November 26 and Thanksgiving Day, November 27. This forecast may change if additional unexpected deflation events occur. Previous episodes have been preceded by hours to days of precursory overflows of degassed magma.

The next high fountain episode, Episode 36, is still most likely to occur between November 4th and November 8th. “Fluctuating inflation rates make it difficult to narrow the forecast window more at this time,” the Observatory says.

#KilaueaVolcano Activity Summary:
Episode 35 fountains began at about 8:05 p.m. HST from the north vent after about 30 minutes of continuous overflows of degassed lava. The fountains rapidly grew to about 500 feet (150 meters) when the south vent began erupting at 8:50 p.m. HST.
Halemaʻumaʻu continues to be quiet this morning with passive outgassing plumes rising from the north & south vents. Incandescence was visible in the north vent & south vents last night, with south vent incandesces being mostly continuous starting around 10 pm on October 14.
#KilaueaVolcano #HVNP
The ongoing eruption at the summit of #Kīlauea volcano is currently paused, following the abrupt end to Ep. 34 lava fountaining on Wednesday morning.
Minor incandescence of the cones and lava flow field was visible overnight, and this morning a heavy outgassing plume can be seen.
