Despite the somewhat reduced intensity of tephra fall around KMC (near the park's Welcome Center) conditions remain hazardous: HVO field crew report tephra clasts up to softball-sized are still dropping.
#HVNP remains closed at Kilauea summit.

Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park is temporarily #closed at the park entrance 🚫 due to the potential for hazardous volcanic material (tephra) 🌋 & gas 🌫️ associated with eruptive episode 44.
Civil Defense is closing Highway 11 🚧 between Nahelenani Street in Volcano & mile marker 40.
Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park is preparing for the next eruption of #Kīlauea volcano (ep. 44), increased visitation & potential for lava fountains & a wind shift from the south.
If Kīlauea erupts during southerly winds it could cause volcanic gas (vog) & tephra to blanket the summit.

🥳Good news! Crater Rim Drive West reopened to #Uēkahuna. The Uēkahuna observation deck, parking lot, restrooms, & the western overlook are open following extensive cleanup efforts to remove massive amounts of tephra from the March 10 eruption.

A little bit louder for the folks in the back: The closed areas around an active volcano are closed for very good reasons. They are based on risk assessment and the likelihood of death/injury. Ignoring them can put you, your friends, your family, and rescue personal in just as much danger.
