The Taş Tepeler Horizon Expands: Göbeklitepe-Style T-Pillars Discovered in Adıyaman - Arkeonews Göbeklitepe-style T-shaped pillars discovered in Adıyaman reveal the wider Taş Tepeler culture and reshape the Neolithic map of Upper Mesopotamia.

Finally! Looks like the #Kilisik sculpture's getting some more regional context. 😉

But to return to our initial list of typological elements of the #Kilisik sculpture, there's one more noteworthy analogy:

3. Its composite character of a larger figure grabbing a smaller one by its head below again reminds of another peculiar find from Göbekli Tepe:

1. With a height of about only 80 cm significatly smaller, the #Kilisik sculpture basically shares the rather abstract T-form of the much larger (up to 5.5 m high!) T-pillars from e.g. #GöbekliTepe, including the depiction of arms on the sides and hands above the belly.

And although we do not know much about its original context, the #Kilisik sculpture could be considered a very special occurence among these #Neolithic depictions: apparently combining elements of various rather different types of already known #sculptures:

Without any analogy the #Kilisik sculpture in its days was remarkable, but remained an oddity - and was largely forgotton.

Until first excavations at #NevaliCori and #GobekliTepe highlighted a completely novel form of #Neolithic sculpture: Pre-Pottery Neolithic T-Pillars.

A rather odd figure: The so-called Kilisik Sculpture from Adıyaman, Turkey – Tepe Telegrams

The #Kilisik sculpture's find history is quite interesting in itself, by the way:

Dug by a local farmer, the sculpture was then obtained by two archaeology students stumbling upon it during an excursion and finally brought to the Adiyaman Archaeological Museum.

But why am I telling all this? - Because there is *another* find, another type which early on helped me better seeing and understanding this human likeness. I am, of course, talking about the so-called #Kilisik sculpture found near #Adiyaman in Türkiye in the 1960s.

Even more: The #Kilisik sculpture itself now can help establishing links between other types of contemporary representations, again increasing our understanding of how these might have been related.

With ongoing research at #NevaliCori, #GobekliTepe, and other related sites our understanding of the complexity of early #Neolithic art has significantly grown - helping to understand formerly rather odd exceptional finds ... like the #Kilisik sculpture.
