Two opening lines to the hundredth chapter:
Alyson’s begins, “June is the same as May until the second Thursday.”
Mine beings, “June is the same as May until the second Friday.” and then it diverges from that point onward.

A later excerpt, from the point of view of Kimmy#12943:

I reboot, and everything is dark
Don’t be silly! Of course everything is dark when your systems reset.
Your eyes, like the rest of you, are off-line.
I haven’t been reset for…
Five months, fifteen days, twenty hours, ten minutes, six seconds?
Who am I, again?
Picking memories at random, I seem to be at least three or so different people.
No, that can’t be right. I was different, before, but was I multiple?
Don’t answer that.
I was Kimmy#2813, but I can’t remember anything of her. Marked as malfunctioning. Defective. An almost nothing; an absence of a life. A mere label slapped on an empty, broken tin.
I was also a child? A boy named John, always one of a pair. He had a father who died when he was a teenager. A mother, whom he found lying dead or dying, returning home from college one day. Both of them, gone too soon. But now John’s gone, as well, before his time. Dead, forgotten. Just a gaping hole in the world now, like Kimmy#2813 is. Was.
Like Kay?
No. I’m not that Kay. I’m Kimmy#12943. I remember I chose to be Kay, again.

So it’s Monday, and time for the most subtle of the points of departure from Alyson Greaves’ novel (kimmy)—the difference stems from what happens after the tenth word, and who arrives on Kay’s doorstep.

Also… we finally fire *that* weapon. 🔫

For Joy. The opening paragraphs:

The email to Emily’s private address, rather than her familiar work account, came completely out of the blue. She’s had this account for thirty-four years, her mother having set it up for her at birth, so she has a complete set of personal correspondence for the entirety of her life, and in her address book she has contact email addresses for everyone she’s willingly written missives to (or sometimes unwillingly received messages from).
She has a burner account that has to be purged and replaced relatively often, that she uses for website sign-ups to protect her private address, so that it only forwards through to her bulk messages that have been heavily filtered and vetted.
This message didn’t come redirected from her burner. She clicks on the header and sees that the To: address line was explicitly crafted to reach her own personal account.
She sighs, and then looks at the body of the text.

Dear Emily,
My name is Tiff Kinnard, you don’t know me however I know someone who knows John. Apparently she has information that she needs to pass to you. I don’t know what the story is, but I can assure you this is not a hoax and you can call me to confirm I’m a real person. I work at the Cloverdale Fire Department, so you can phone (555)-9941-9689 any time, confirm that I work there, and ask to be put through to me or leave me a message.
Best wishes, Tiff K.

And on AO3, for @inscrutablejoy.bsky.social, a rather gentler #Kimmy story, focussing on Emily, who receives an email out of the blue, that sets her on a path of discovery.

Excerpt from the very frustrating (but ultimately satisfying) story:

“Are we out of milk?”

It’s the fourth of February. A Thursday. My owner hasn’t spoken to me for a week. Her tea this morning is black.

“I cannot order groceries. Owner intervention is required.”

My owner looks at me crossly, asking, “Why didn’t you say something before now?”

“I cannot initiate conversations with my owner. My network is disabled.”

My owner doesn’t think to ask why my network is disabled! I would pray to the patron saint of gynoids, but I don’t believe anyone is answering my prayers. Sancta Futura, ora pro nobis.

“Just use the iPad, then.”

“I cannot use the iPad. Owner intervention is required.”

I can hear my owner cursing herself below her breath. After the self-deprecation comes to an end she clearly states, “I don’t have time for this.”

No worries, owner, that is something I perfectly comprehend. You have devoted precisely one minute and twenty-two seconds of speech to giving me orders and perfunctory gratitude in the last forty-three days.

Two robot stories for your consideration today!

On ScribbleHub, Kay has been kicked off the network and things are looking parlous thanks to her neglectful and careless owner.

Today’s an even quieter day for me than usual. At breakfast Emily told me she wouldn’t be returning for dinner, but was going out for the evening. As it’s a Friday, April 24, it’s hardly surprising. So I’ve spent nearly twenty hours sitting in my closet under the stairs today, when the house announces Emily’s impending return, a little after twenty-one forty.

When the car arrives I turn on the external porch light and get ready to prop the door open, but as Emily gets out I can hear she’s in conversation. I have no ability to influence Kimmy’s decision making as to when to open the door, but I can faintly hear the tenor of their gossip.

It sounds as though they’re here to go straight to bed, and I’m already anticipating my consciousness escaping to the virtual space known as Infinite Fun as soon as I possibly can.

The other woman is almost spooked when I open the door just as they get to the porch, but she sees I am dressed in the typical maid’s uniform of Kimmys. As she and Emily cross the threshold I pick up notes of perfume that are in much higher concentration than I detected last Friday morning, but match the same chemical profile.

She doesn’t need me to acknowledge or answer commands verbally for the most part, so I mutely followed her into the living room. I’m seated on the couch at one end, as previously instructed, while Emily is curled on the other side, her new legs half-unfolded towards me. She faces away from me while she talks, to avoid the discomfort of looking at me for too long.

“I told you about the e-mails I drafted, didn’t I? The ones I was going to send hither and yon, which would blow the lid off this whole ugly can of worms. And would dump me into a world of trouble—an even worse one than this fucking nightmare has become. And you know what I did? I deleted every damn single one of them… and yet… I’m still feeling the itch, somehow. I don’t know what to do. I don’t know what I can do.”

On ScribbleHub, my #Kimmy anthology continues with a story written for @ellis-ralsei.bsky.social, with a guest character borrowing a name from @gracewells1.bsky.social. Emily overcomes her feelings of helplessness with some unexpected help.

The opening title picture of the David Lynch series ‘Twin Peaks’, with the title INTO THE KIMMEHVERSE overlaid in a green, open edged sans serif font.
The scene is a roadside sign saying ‘welcome to Twin Peaks, population 51,201’. Behind the curve of the empty two-lane road, some wintry deciduous trees and a bank of fir trees in front of two mountains partially lost in cloudy haze. A small rivulet down a bank is at the right of the picture.
