For me, morning synchronicity. #anthonypowelltogether and #kingjohn_2025 A society’s danger is less outside evil than the actions of silliness, ignorance, irony masquerading as power. Long live the Bastard!

I liked Shakespeare's King John much more than I thought I would. I read that it was one of the least popular and least performed plays.
I wanted to find a performance on YouTube but all of them have such bad sound quality that it's impossible to understand.

Is, as a fiend, confin’d to tyrannize
On unreprievable condemned blood.”

What surety of the world, what hope, what stay,
When this was now a king, and now is clay?”

KING JOHN.
I am a scribbled form, drawn with a pen
Upon a parchment, and against this fire
Do I shrink up.
Act V s7 #KingJohn_2025 Such imagery- I may have to re-read this play in a few years.
Death scene. One of four scenes, first Shakesp film 1899, from the lavish Herbert Beerbohm Tree production. Tree is John. Prince Henry, to his right, is actress Dora Senior. #kingjohn_2025 youtu.be/7lWn99STB1o?...

I am the cygnet to this pale faint swan,
Who chants a doleful hymn to his own death,
And from the organ-pipe of frailty sings
His soul and body to their lasting rest.

Since I must lose the use of all deceit?
Why should I then be false, since it is true
That I must die here, and live hence by truth?”

SALISBURY. I did not think the kings so stored with friends.
PEMBROKE. Up once again: put spirit in the French:
If they miscarry, we miscarry too.

But even this night, — whose black contagious breath
Already smokes about the burning crest
Of the old, feeble, and day-wearied sun—
Exquisite. And how I feel in my own time. #kingjohn_2025

And like a bated and retired floot,
Leaving our rankness and irregular course,
Stoop low within those bounds we have o'erlook'd,
And calmly run on in obedience
Even to our ocean, to our great King John.

“…when I saw it [King John] acted, what with its intrigues and doublecrossings, non-aggression pacts, quislings, people changing sides in the middle of a battle, and what-not, it seemed to me extraordinarily up to date."

V, 2.
Me thinks this scene one of the very best examples of Shakesp’s rollicking, pirouetting language. (the metaphors!) Almost comical in light of such a grave topic of war. This play’s a winner in my book. #kingjohn_2025
