Anthony Powell Society

You’re welcome. I recently did a slow reading with an online group. If you’re interested, you can refer to our thoughts using #anthonypowelltogether.

Also, The Anthony Powell society website is useful for keeping track of the characters.

I started the Spurling bio of Anthony Powell. It seems Powell researched genealogy throughout his life, and he found a 12th century connection to Llyr of Crugeryr--Shakespeare's Lear (p8).

#anthonypowelltogether My SIL - Malcolm's sister - died in her sleep on Saturday morning and I left quickly for New Orleans, but I'm looking forward to reading your comments about the ending of this epic read. We did it. Thank you all for your smart and great company on another slow read.

Hibou le Literature Supporter's review of Hearing Secret Harmonies (A Dance to the Music of Time, #12) 4/5: This ends surely the only way it could have ended. One question is could Powell have kept writing more books? I don't see why not. Admittedly, this review is more of the total work, than just boo...

An epic long-read! Here's my goodreads review of book 12.

What’s really funny is that from my reading 50 years ago I remembered Widmerpool ending up Prime Minister! So much for memory and eye witness testimony. Whew. No wonder I liked the ending. #anthonypowelltogether

"Lord Widmerpool seemed to enjoy a tussle, then giving in, and being given a penance. Never knew such a man for penances." Ah, what an enigmatic figure was Widmerpool. Plenty of penances (you might say) throughout the books, from bananas to sugar to red paint to stink bombs.

Did anyone else find Robert Burton’s words comforting? I often feel I’m living in the Middle Ages, powerless among evil and frightening prospects. But it is a dance… change happens regardless of our fear. #anthonypowelltogether

Widmerpool also ends as he begins, running. I’d forgotten until I reread opening of vol 1. Did we ever learn when the first paragraphs took place? #anthonypowelltogether

I know I bitched about the last volumes, but I'm going to really miss my daily dose of Dance. In the end, Nick too was exactly the same. Same steady observer and chronicler that he was at the beginning. His steadiness-- and steadfastness-- quite comforting. #anthonypowelltogether

I admit I held out hope that Stringham would come walking toward Jenkins like he'd only been gone a week or so.
And I had my doubts about Powell being able to pull it all together, but I thought he managed it quite nicely.

Thanks, as always, for being the fearless leader.

Templer and Stringham return. So might we say our possessions do live on and carry our spirit? After seeing Powell’s home, I’m sure he believed that. Buy well, then. And Surround Yourselves With Beauty. ♥️ #anthonypowelltogether

Widmerpool ends as he begins. A victim of bullying. Astute of Powell to realize change is almost impossible. We try, hope, work— and then end up as the child we were. #Anthonypowelltogether

Finishing a great series like Dance is one thing I don’t like about bsky reading. It’s like everyone’s already fled the room, on to the next thing. But then, maybe it’s the same with reading on one’s own. The emptiness at ending. #anthonypowelltogether
