🌍💎 Sure #KingSolomonsMines' depiction of Africa is awfully outdated and pure pulp but all the requirements for an entertaining adventure film are still there. A dashing charismatic lead, a beautiful damsel in distress, an excellent pair of dastardly foes and an epic quest to boot! 📽️🎞️
Poster for the adventure film 'King Solomon's Mines' (1985). Directed by J. Lee Thompson. Starring Richard Chamberlain, Sharon Stone, Herbert Lom, John Rhys-Davies and Ken Gampu. 🌍💎 Released #OnThisDay 40 years ago. Surprisingly decent epic adventure film from the producer duo Golan-Globus based on the H. Rider Haggard novel of the same name. Certainly one of the better Indiana Jones "rip-offs" out there. #KingSolomonsMines 📽️🎞️

Frame from the adventure film 'King Solomon's Mines' (1985). A blonde woman (Sharon Stone as Jesse Huston) standing next to a 1910s biplane and flirting to a pilot standing with his back to the camera. White tents of the encampment visible in the background.
Frame from the adventure film 'Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold' (1986). A blonde woman (Sharon Stone as Jesse Huston) with glasses looking a gold coin that she's holding in his hands.
Frame from the adventure film 'Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold' (1986). A blonde woman (Sharon Stone as Jesse Huston) wearing a pink dress and a hat sitting facing a man (Richard Chamberlain as Allan Quatermain) with dark brown hair and a green shirt.
But if we're being completely honest I would still watch both JUST for Sharon Stone's sake alone. 🥰 Even though she's not given much else to do than play THE MOST stereotypical damsel in distress. 🫣 #KingSolomonsMines #AllanQuatermainAndTheLostCityOfGold 📽️🎞️
Frame from the adventure film 'King Solomon's Mines' (1985). A blonde white woman (Sharon Stone as Jesse Huston) and a bearded white man (Richard Chamberlain as Allan Quatermain) standing on a platform on top of a massive clay pot standing on top of a fire. A massive crowd of African tribesmen holding spears surrounding 'em.
Frame from the adventure film 'King Solomon's Mines' (1985). A bearded white man with dark brown hair (Richard Chamberlain as Allan Quatermain) holding a blonde white woman (Sharon Stone as Jesse Huston) wearing a jeweled crown. Crowd of African tribesmen standing in the background.

Frame from the adventure film 'Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold' (1986). An expedition coming down stairs towards the camera to a passage surrounded by stone walls on both sides. Three spears pointing up from the ground on the foreground.
Admittedly the depiction of Africa is awfully outdated and pure pulp fiction so I do understand that neither #KingSolomonsMines or #AllanQuatermainAndTheLostCityOfGold are everyone's cup of tea this day and age. But I still think of them fondly like lot of cheese from my childhood. 📽️🎞️

Frame from the adventure film 'Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold' (1986). A bearded dark haired man (Richard Chamberlain as Allan Quatermain) in a sword fight with a black fuzzy haired high priest (Henry Silva as Agon) dressed in purple and gold robes.
#AllanQuatermainAndTheLostCityOfGold just pales in comparison to #KingSolomonsMines in pretty much every way, shape or form. Poorer story, special effects & action. Lot more comic relief heavy. Although James Earl Jones beats Ken Gampu as a sidekick solely with his charisma. 📽️🎞️
And let's face it, the film's main title composed by Jerry Goldsmith is brilliant. At least that bit that kicks in at 1:03. I get chills running up my spine every time I hear it. Such a roaring theme! www.youtube.com/watch?v=msL0... 🎶 #KingSolomonsMines 📽️🎞️

Personally speaking #KingSolomonsMines is surprisingly decent Indiana Jones-esque adventure film even if it was made with half of Raiders' and third of Temple of Doom's budget. And despite being a bit too front heavy action-wise. 📽️🎞️

Given Richard Chamberlain's passing I must remind people of the two Indiana Jones "ripoffs" from producer duo Golan-Globus. Sure the films are based on H. Rider Haggard's novels but it's blatantly obvious what was being emulated here. 🤫 #KingSolomonsMines #AllanQuatermainAndTheLostCityOfGold 📽️🎞️
