Class photos of the first course on **Kink History** ever taught in North America, to my knowledge. The students came up with the idea of memorializing our seminar with a photograph. What a blast! @uvichumanities.bsky.social #histsex #kinkhistory @uvic.ca
Is the kink concept of "play" a way to think about sexuality without pigeonholing in taxonomies of sexual identities that stigmatize and pathologize human sexuality? I love this idea (Tiidenberg and Passonen 2019)

one little tidbit of research i came across while editing the water power video was Water & Power vol.1 no.4. the magazine featured in the movie!

I love @susanstryker.bsky.social's big brain. Amused at her description of wielding the whip in an intense dungeon scene and her sense *in the moment* is to object to Freud's oedipal reading of flagellation fantasies in "A Child is Being Beaten."

I know we're all complaining about CBS news *now* but did you know that in the 1980 documentary "Gay Power, Gay Politics" CBS claimed that 10% of all deaths in San Francisco were BDSM related? #bdsm #kinkhistory #media
#kinkhistory reading note #17 Patrick Califia's landmark 1981 essay "A Personal View of the History of the Lesbian S/M Community and Movement in San Francisco" with its clarion cry: "I have always wanted freedom to be as queer, as perverted, on the street and on the job as I am in my dungeon."

Did *not* know that Ian Fleming and his wife Ann were SM practitioners. My childhood makes so much more sense now. #kinkhistory #bdsm
Pro-dommes could make $500 a session in 1965 (equivalent of $5K today). No deep thoughts about this. Just impressed.

Guess the year for this leather man's complaint that the scene had become too popular and was full of tourists: #histsex #kinkhistory #queerhistory #bdsm
Reading Roger Kimball's excoriating review of "The Passion of Michel Foucault from 1993 and for a man who is disgusted by BDSM he sure spends a lot of time revelling in every detail. Bemused by his assertion (pulled from his ass, I presume) that BDSM destroys all pleasure

While I think Havelock Ellis knew bubkes about women, this passage on the role of pain in sexuality as a lever for amplifying emotional dynamics, is far more interesting and persuasive to me #kinkhistory #BDSM

Freud's 1919 essay "A child is being beaten," argues that masochism emerges from the guilty repression of childhood incest fantasies. This essay is the subject of so much scholarship. His daughter, Anna, was one of his case studies and wrote her own essay on the topic
I did not expect Havelock Ellis's explanation of masochism to be that women have no feeling between their legs and need to be hurt to feel anything

Krafft-Ebing's case studies of masochism are far more psychological than his case studies of sadism. Here he argues that Rousseau's masochism is what led to the formulation of his theories of the self. Was the problem of masochism at the root of modern interiority?

Returning to Sharon Marcus's chapter in Between Women on the homoeroticism of Victorian fashion plates and doll literature and reading it this time through the eyes of kink. Marcus describes the fashion plate as "a respectable ... form of female cruising." So good.
It's flagellation week in my #kinkhistory seminar. I love Sarah Toulalan's work, and her chapter on flagellation in the 17th c from Imagining Sex (2007) did not disappoint. She argues that flagellation was seen as excitatory for physiological reasons, not psychological. Also love this illustration ๐๏ธ

Lawrence Stone's 1992 article on a small group of young adults in 1707 Norwich who engaged in group sex, public flagellation, and exhibitionism, is an archival treasure. His analysis focuses on the influence of pornography. How might a kink perspective be useful?

We're also reading Sacher-Masoch in this week's unit on literary foundations. Getting Morrissey vibes from this quotation. (And if a ten-tonne truck kills the both of us, to die by your side, well the pleasure the privilege is mine)

in chap 3, Tupper argues that 18th-c sensibility gave meaning to secular flagellation because, as Burke argued, "extreme physical experiences awakens the strongest emotions which are a source of the experience of the sublime, a higher emotional truth beyond reason"
#kinkhistory reading note # 5
It's de Sade week. In "Sex, Pain and the Marquis de Sade," David Morris argues that Sade is a turning point in the reinvention of pain from God-centered to physiological & "the moment when pain openly, violent, and irreversibly breaks into the arena of sexual pleasure"
#kinkhistory reading note # 5
Erika Carbonara "Cuckold Communities in the Kinky Early Modern" reframes the cuckold as "engaging in a kink that brings them pleasure" and eagerly anticipating his own derision. True today, is it a stretch to see evidence of the same in the past?
Is this 1503 excerpt from an astrological text by Pico della Mirandola the first secular material discussion of flagellation? #kinkhistory
#kinkhistory reading note # 4:
Our textbook for the semester is @historyofbdsm.bsky.social's A Lover's Pinch (2018). Chapters 1-2 explore early Christian mortification, flagellation etc.
Why in the early 16th c. did it become impossible to not see sexuality in what had been religious ecstasy?

Staci Newmahr, Playing on the Edge (2011)
on the first day of class we tackled definitions. lots of debate about the usefulness (or not) of definitions, the queerness or not of kink, the role of community. This definition of SM by Newmahr is one of the more concrete
