The first time is mostly an accident. They're working together—reluctantly, on Kit's part—to stop one of Eggman's plans, trying to crack the code keeping a door closed that Sonic needs to get through. It's hard, and Tails feels like they're just banging their heads against the wall when Kit mutters what if we try... And the door opens. "Kit!" Tails yelps, beyond excited. He turns to Kit to find, to his surprise, that the fox is looking back at him. "That was brilliant!" Kit smiles, just the slightest upward quirk of the corners of his lips. Tails' heart swells—and before he knows what's happening, he's leaned forward to press his lips against Kit's. He pulls back a second later and turns back to the screen showing Sonic racing through the hallway he needed to reach, pumping his fist excitedly when he bashes through several Badnik's without issue—and then he abruptly realizes what he just did and turns to look at Kit again.

He's expecting him to look angry, possibly even to have left—but Kit is looking at the screen as well. His ears are bright red, but his expression is otherwise unchanged. And, well, if Kit is going to pretend the momentary lapse in judgement didn't happen, Tails is more than happy to do the same— —except that it keeps happening. Not every time they see each other, but certainly every time they're alone. At first it's just Tails initiating it; now that he's given into the impulse once, it's like a dam has broken. He can't stop himself. Any time Kit exhibits that trademark brilliance, any time he cracks a joke, any time he smiles, especially—Tails is powerless to suppress the urge to kiss him. The first time Kit kisses him, Tails isn't expecting it. He's in the middle of complaining about Orbot when Kit suddenly grabs him by the shoulder and smashes their lips together. It's a lot more aggressive than when Tails kisses him; when Kit pulls away, Tails brings a hand up to his bottom lip, where Kit's teeth knocked into it so hard he thinks he might have bruised him.

"Ow," Tails says. "Shut up," Kit says. Then he kisses him again. So far their kisses have all been chaste, just a quick press of their lips together—but this time Kit licks over the painful spot on Tails' lips, something like a silent apology. His tongue is warm and soothing—and Tails thinks, oh, whatever. He parts his mouth and licks at Kit's lips until suddenly they're not just kissing but making out. They part after a few minutes, both breathless and red-faced. For a moment they stare at each other. To Tails it feels like a thousand words pass between them in that moment—but Kit must not agree, because he turns away abruptly. "Not a word," he mutters.
