Kia ora, originally from Berlin, I am an independent historian working in New Zealand. My current research involves investigating the provenance of taonga (objects) associated with Ngati Kahu, an iwi (tribe) in the far north of New Zealand. Maori have a strong interest in bringing their taonga home. Museums in New Zealand are now more proactively identifying taonga which should be returned, addressing their provenance history. Funding is a major constraint for this work to take place. My hope is that its positive impact on creating honest conversations and fostering relationships becomes widely recognised. I would like to see more provenance researchers working together, exchanging ideas and experiences, and developing collaborations.
