Red-cheeked salamander on the ground. It is a long black salamander with a red cheek on each side of the body behind its eyes. This one is looking right, with its head slightly raised and its front legs seem to be tucked in a bit. Its tail, which tapes off from the body, is curled around to just in front of its back leg.

Always a must in the Smokies. Kuwohi. (formerly Clingmsn’s dome). Don’t be fooled by the length of this trail. Yes it’s paved, yes it’s short, but it’s a steep grade all the way. The views are so worth it. I suggest early morning, before the fog burns off.
