Kwale County distributes 5,000 hybrid coconut seedlings to farmers Kwale County Government has commenced the distribution of 5,000 hybrid coconut seedlings to small-holder coconut farmers across nine Administrative Wards. This initiative by the devolved government aims to boost rural economic growth and diversify incomes through cash crop farming. Governor Fatuma Achani says the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to promote agricultural sustainability, enhance food security, and boost economic empowerment. Governor Achani noted that the devolved government has also launched a coconut farming campaign since it is a fast-growing cash crop in the coastal county. The County Boss says coconut is a highly significant commodity in the coastal region culturally, socially and economically. The Governor noted that in Kwale the coconut Sub-sector holds immense potential to drive economic growth, enhance food security, and promote sustainability. She stated that these improved certified coconut seedlings are expected to enhance both the quality and quantity of coconuts produced in Kwale. Achani said the seedlings were tailored to thrive in the local climatic conditions and seeks to empower small-scale coconut farmers to increase their yields, improve the quality of their produce, and ultimately elevate their economic status. Speaking during the flagging-off ceremony at the Kwale County Headquarters in Kwale town, Governor Achani urged the beneficiaries to plant the trees on time and nurture them diligently to ensure successful growth. “I urge all the beneficiaries to plant and nurture these trees diligently, as coconut farming plays a crucial role in our County’s economy,” she said, adding that the coconut value chain is among the crops being promoted by the Devolved Unit. Achani, who was accompanied by the County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Agriculture, Roman Shera, emphasized the importance of taking farming seriously to enhance food security in the region. “In order to ensure a food-secure Kwale, we must utilize every resource at our disposal, including these coconut seedlings. I urge all farmers to be diligent in their agricultural efforts,” said Achani. “Under this program, the seedlings will be allocated to nine wards, with each ward receiving 555 seedlings,” She added. Achani said that the event marked a significant step toward the growth and prosperity of the County’s nascent coconut industry and emphasized the County’s dedication to agricultural development and the potential for local industrialization and economic enhancement. She said the areas that will benefit from the distribution exercise are Tsimba/Golini, Mkongani, Kubo South, Ramisi, Kinondo, Bongwe/Gombato, Vanga, Dzombo, and Pongwe/Kikoneni wards. Achani explained that the County carefully selected the nine major coconut-producing wards as beneficiaries because of their optimal production, adding that other wards where climatic conditions are favorable would benefit soon. The Governor assured farmers that all County-owned tractors with mechanical issues would be repaired to support land preparation and enhance productivity. County Agriculture Executive, Roman Shera, encouraged the coconut farmers to embrace the opportunity with enthusiasm and determination. Shera said in addition to the seedlings the County government is committed to providing the necessary support, training, and provision of resources to help local farmers maximize their coconut farming potentials. The Agriculture Executive said the new variety the farmers received is resistant to many common coconut diseases thus reducing the need for chemical treatments adding that they start bearing fruits earlier than many other varieties leading to quicker returns on investment. Karama Pore, Chair of the Agriculture Committee in Tsimba/Golini Ward, expressed gratitude to the County government for its support. Pore while taking the delivery of the seedlings highlighted the economic significance of coconut farming in the coastal region and urged residents to plant more trees rather than cutting them down for building materials. “Coconut is the cash crop of the coastal region. Let’s protect and expand our coconut farming instead of destroying these valuable trees,” said pore. The primary product from coconuts is cooking oil, which is widely used in households and the food industry. Additionally, the shells are utilized as firewood and are crafted into ornaments and handicrafts, providing income for local artisans. **By Hussein Abdullahi** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Parents urged to teach children good morals Parents in Kwale County have been urged to teach their children moral values and principles that would help shape their future for a better society. Area Governor Fatuma Achani and Kwale Woman Representative Fatuma Masito, have urged parents to reexamine their roles as many have failed or abandoned their parental responsibilities. Governor Achani and Masito lamented the increasing cases of youth involvement in drug abuse, criminal activities, and immorality in the coastal county. The call by the two leaders comes on the backdrop of attacks by machete-wielding gangs on residents and business premises in Diani municipality. A notorious gang referred to as ‘Panga boys’ has long been known for terrorizing residents by visiting a string of criminal activities. The machete-wielding gangs have unleashed terror in various sub-counties within Kwale, with Msambweni and Matuga being among the most affected. Speaking at an Islamic religious occasion in Msambweni Sub County the duo have blamed the emergence of machete-wielding gangs on failed parenting. Achani regretted the emergence of juvenile criminal gangs in several parts of Kwale and called on the parents and guardians to inculcate a culture of good morals, honesty, and hard work in young people. Governor Achani has emphasized the need for parents to take responsibility for their children’s upbringing. Achani implored parents and religious leaders to take action to address the parenting crisis that has resulted in a breakdown of the social fabric. “As future leaders the youth need to be taught good morals so as to lead a purposeful life in adulthood,” she said. Governor Achani says the rate at which local youths were engaging in drug and substance abuse and criminal activities, and other social vices was deplorable. She urged religious leaders and imams to complement parental efforts in instilling good morals in the youth. “We call on our religious scholars to continuously preach peace, love and unity for a prosperous society,” she said. Achani decried the involvement of youth, some as young as 12 years old, in criminal activities and emphasised the need for public support in maintaining law and order. The coastal county boss said her administration remained committed to implementing policies that would enhance the quality of life for area residents. Achani underscored the need for the youths to embrace skills acquisition to reduce their vulnerability to negative influences. She noted that the devolved government has set up vocational training centres across the coastal county in a bid to pull hundreds of youths out of poverty. Fatuma Masito expressed concerns over the neglect of family values and called on parents to reexamine their roles. She advised parents to raise their children uprightly to curb the rising moral decadence among the youth in society. Masito also called on families to inculcate proper upbringing in their children to stem the tide of violence in parts of the county. She said it is the responsibility of the parents to ensure that their children grow to become responsible and respectable citizens. **By Hussein Abdullahi** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

12,700 Kwale Homes Connected to Power in Sh1.4bn Project The Sh1.4 billion last-mile connectivity project in Kwale County provides electricity to over 12,707 households, unlocking new opportunities for economic growth. By powering agribusiness and the blue economy, this initiative will drive wealth creation and improve livelihoods across the coastal region. The last mile connectivity project was commissioned by President William Ruto at Kiwegu Secondary School grounds in Vanga, Kwale County. President Ruto said the purpose of the project is to increase universal access to electricity for Kenyan households in rural areas. He said the national government will focus on enhancing the country’s power infrastructure, improving grid reliability, and exploring innovative energy solutions to ensure the smooth development of the country. The Head of State said the new development is expected to improve access to electricity, enhance economic activities, and contribute to the overall well-being of the communities in Kwale. He said access to electricity promotes social well-being by improving services such as education, healthcare and security. “The government is committed to ensuring that Kenyans, especially those in rural areas, are provided with electricity either by the national power grid or renewable power options such as solar power,” he said. President Ruto said connecting more areas to the country’s national electricity grid will be a catalyst for the development of the counties. Area Governor Fatuma Achani expressed happiness over the new project, noting that increased electricity access would stimulate economic growth, enhance education, and improve healthcare services in rural areas. She said the project will, in the long run, enhance agricultural productivity, support local enterprises, improve educational outcomes, and bolster healthcare services. Achani reaffirmed her administration’s collaboration with the national government to ensure inclusive development for Kwale residents. “This project marks a new chapter for Kwale. With more homes and businesses gaining access to power, our people will have better opportunities to thrive,” she said and called on the residents to protect the project against vandals. She asked the beneficiary communities to use electricity for income-generating activities to improve their living standards and contribute towards national development. The coastal county boss stated that access to electricity for households and businesses through the last mile connectivity will spur economic growth at the grassroots level. Achani emphasized the significance of the project in fostering development and improving the standard of living in the benefiting communities. According to her, the project was a significant stride towards attaining the government’s goal of achieving universal access by the year 2030, besides meeting sustainable development goals. **By Hussein Abdullahi** __ Share on Facebook Share __ Share on TwitterTweet __ Send email Mail

Once complete the residents of Ukunda, Tiwi, Kombani and Check Point areas will have access to an abundant supply of water daily,” said Parmet.</p> <p>Parmet described the development of the new water infrastructure as ‘a long-awaited relief’ noting that it will soon end the prolonged water scarcity in Diani municipality and its environs.</p> <p>He says over the years, access to piped water has been declining due to lack of extension, deteriorating distribution network infrastructures and rapid population growth.</p> <p>Parmet urged the benefiting communities to maintain the water infrastructure provided by the county government and the Kwale Water Company to ensure its long-term effectiveness.</p> <p><strong>By Hussein Abdullahi and Wambui Chege</strong></p> <div class="apss-social-share apss-theme-1 clearfix"> <div class="apss-facebook apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://www.facebook.com/sharer/sharer.php?u=https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/kwale-county-rolls-out-water-supply-and-sanitation-projects/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Facebook"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-facebook"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Facebook</span> <span class="apss-share">Share</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-twitter apss-single-icon"> <a href="https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?text=Kwale%20County%20rolls%20out%20water%20supply%20and%20sanitation%20projects&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.kenyanews.go.ke%2Fkwale-county-rolls-out-water-supply-and-sanitation-projects%2F&amp;" rel="nofollow" target="_blank" title="Share on Twitter"> <div class="apss-icon-block clearfix"> <i class="fa fa-twitter"></i> <span class="apss-social-text">Share on Twitter</span><span class="apss-share">Tweet</span> </div> </a> </div> <div class="apss-email apss-single-icon"> <a class="share-email-popup" href='mailto:?subject=Please visit this link https://www.kenyanews.go.ke/kwale-county-rolls-out-water-supply-and-sanitation-projects/&amp;body=Hey Buddy!, I found this information for you: "Kwale%20County%20rolls%20out%20water%20supply%20and%20sanitation%20projects".
