Nagoshi-no-harae (夏越の祓) first appeared in the Nara period, 1 of 2 purification ceremonies performed each year by shrines and at the imperial court.

The devastating Ōnin War (1467-77) ended these traditions within the palace, and over time the 12th month purification slowly disappeared.

Kyoto Tower was part of the reconstruction of Japan in the early 1960s, done in preparation for the 1964 Olympics. I used to think this tower was an eyesore... But today it is an iconic part of the Kyoto skyline.
