What is the EVICTABLE RENT DEBT THRESHOLD?
In the City of L.A., tenants have protections from being evicted for small amounts of rent debt.
A landlord cannot legally file an eviction until a tenant meets the "evictable rent debt threshold" which is 1 month of "fair market rent."
The "fair market rent" amount is determined by HUD and depends on the number of bedrooms in your home:

For example, currently if you live in a 1-bedroom apartment in the city of Los Angeles, your landlord cannot evict you for less than $2085 in unpaid rent.
On Tuesday the board of supervisors will vote on whether to triple that threshold, giving tenants facing the economic crisis caused by ICE more time to catch up on rent, and get organized.

How would raising the evictable debt threshold support immigrant tenants?
• It would buy tenants time to apply to rent relief programs and organize before risking a court process, or losing their homes.
• It would automatically apply to ALL TENANTS in LA County without a need to "self-certify".
• Tenants would not have to disclose sensitive information in order to be protected.
It's a matter of political will.
The legal groundwork exists for the County to take bold action.
Due to LA County's state of emergency and ICE's ongoing threat to health, safety, and human life, the Board of Supervisors has expanded legal authority over the county's 88 cities.
