In 2022, the Scottish Census asked about sexual orientation & trans status for the first time!

The Census (Amendment) (Scotland) Act passed in 2019, which enabled this change. We campaigned for this since 2007, it is vital to combat harmful beliefs & erasure of LGBT+ people in the UK. #LGBTHM2025

The Gender Recognition Act was passed by the UK Parliament in 2004, coming into effect in April 2005. The Act allowed trans people to have their gender legally recognised for the first time, through a Gender Recognition Certificate. #LGBTHM2025

England and Wales caught up to Scotland and finally repealed Section 28 in 2003!

Scotland can & should be a leader in equality & human rights. Since the parliament was established in 1999, we've often led the way in creating more inclusive legislation, from section 28 to trans rights. #lgbthm2025

After a 12-year campaign Section 28 was finally repealed in Scotland, through the Ethical Standards in Public Life etc. (Scotland) Act in June 2000.

99 MSPs voted to repeal, while 2 MSPs abstained & 17 voted against repeal. This year marks 25 years since the section was repealed! #lgbthm2025
