The Gender Recognition Reform Act was finally introduced in 2022, it recieved support from all the parties in the Scottish Parliament besides the Conservatives. On 22nd December, it passed w/ a significant majority of 86 MSPs in favour, 39 MSPs against & 4 MSPS who did not vote #LGBTHM2025

In 2021, the Scottish Parliament passed the Hate Crime and Public Order (Scotland) Act, it fully came into effect in 2024.

The Scottish Parliament passed the Civil Partnerships (Scotland) Act 2020, which allowed legally mixed-sex couples to finally be in a Civil Partnership. The first ceremonies took place in June 2021! Before this only legally same-sex couples had been able to get a Civil Partnership. #LGBTHM2025

Following the success of the campaign for Equal Marriage, at the end of 2014 we launched our Equal Recognition campaign with Scottish Trans!

It worked to improve trans rights in Scotland, by pushing for the Scottish Government to reform the Gender Recognition Act (2004) #LGBTHM2025

The Marriage and Civil Partnerships (Scotland) Bill passed its third stage in the Scottish Parliament on 4th Feb 2014, w/ 105 votes in favour & 18 votes against. At the time this was the 3rd largest percentage of politicians in favour when passing Equal Marriage legislation in the world! #lgbthm2025

The Scottish Government launched a consultation on the Marriage and Civil Partnership (Scotland) Bill in late 2012, and it was officially introduced on 27th June 2013. At this time, the Equal Marriage bill for England and Wales had just passed in the UK Parliament! #LGBTHM2025

We first launched the Campaign for Equal Marriage in Scotland in 2008, although we had been campaigning for civil marriage since our first manifesto in 1999. We worked alongside other organisations to launch a petition in the Scottish Parliament for Equal Marriage in 2009. #LGBTHM2025

The Equality Act was passed in 2010. It brought together lots of different pieces of legislation into one cohesive anti-discrimination law that protects people in lots of different aspects of society, particularly at work and/or while being a consumer or service user. #LGBTHM2025

In 2009, the Offences (Aggravation by Prejudice) (Scotland) Act 2009 was passed by the Scottish Parliament. This legislation was a massive step forward, as it was the first hate crime legislation in Europe to explicitly include transphobic harrassment. It came into effect in 2010. #LGBTHM2025

Charlie Kiss was a political activist & the first trans man to stand for parliament when he contested Islington South & Finsbury in 2015. Although he did not win the election, his candidacy was a milestone for transgender visibility and representation in politics.

In 2007 we hired the first member of the Scottish Trans team & it was officially established as a national project working to improve the equality & human rights of trans people! LGBT+ History Month has taken place in the UK every February since 2005.

The first ever LGBT+ History Month took place in America in October 1994, but February was chosen as the UK's LGBT+ History Month because Section 28 was repealed in England and Wales in February 2003. #LGBTHM2025

The Civil Partnership Act gained Royal Assent in 2004, and came into effect on the 5th December 2005. England and Wales caught up to Scotland and finally repealed Section 28 in 2003!

Scotland can & should be a leader in equality & human rights. Since the parliament was established in 1999, we've often led the way in creating more inclusive legislation, from section 28 to trans rights. #lgbthm2025

After a 12-year campaign Section 28 was finally repealed in Scotland, through the Ethical Standards in Public Life etc. (Scotland) Act in June 2000.

99 MSPs voted to repeal, while 2 MSPs abstained & 17 voted against repeal. This year marks 25 years since the section was repealed! #lgbthm2025
