Great write-up of #LILAC23 from @WoodsieGirl, including particular reference to our provocation on referencing as a form of oppressive academic practice from me @ThomasPeachLib @LudiPrice @infogamerist

Not looking forward to tackling my inbox tomorrow morning after three weeks gadding about on my UK tour at #UKSG2023, #LILAC23 and #KR21OAI

Could you find three more stunning librarians? Don’t answer, it’s rhetorical, because of course the answer is no, no one can rival @meaohara, me and @libmichelle. Even with me letting the side down with no sequins! #LILAC23

Third keynote of the conference - Regina Everitt from UEL talking about the library’s role in supporting technology-enhanced learning. #LILAC23

If staff don’t put much effort into lists of suggested reading or keep them up to date, if students don’t use them very much, why is the library wasting money buying this stuff? What are the implications for our collections? *cough*RLDA*cough* 🤨 #LILAC23

Lots of literature, research and opinions about how reading lists should be managed, structured, disseminated, how students should use them, how academic staff should create them, the library facilitate them. But no questioning of the existence of the list at all. #LILAC23

A real gap in expectations around the purpose and place of reading lists within the curriculum between staff and students (and again between those groups and the library, I’d imagine!) #LILAC23

The place of reading lists is rarely questioned. There’s just an assumption that they are a sine qua non in education. But as most are currently constructed and used, they have little actual pedagogic value. #LILAC23

Few suggestions - starting place for research, provide direction for students, lists of items for library to buy… #LILAC23

A very good question indeed, @libmichelle! #LILAC23

Day 3 of #LILAC23 - much quieter and thinner on the ground this morning. A few sore heads and some oversleeping this morning, I suspect!

#LILAC23 librarians are such a bad influence. I don’t even stay up this late on New Year’s Eve. I usually turn into a pumpkin at 10pm. 🛌 💤

Signposting to assistive tech and features - don’t single users out, highlight the tools to everyone. Can be useful to those without accessibility needs - and also those who may be not be diagnosed, quite a few students don’t get the help and support needed until uni. #LILAC23

The focus is often also mainly around students (again because of external accountability, ie. OFS etc) and often ignores staff needs. #LILAC23

Institutions often ensure they’re doing the bare minimum legally, rather than really focusing on people-centred support at the heart of their offer. #LILAC23

Accessibility and EDI work often falls on individuals to push forward, rather than an institution-wide commitment - can result in inconsistent and patchy support, often adjustments made after, rather than inclusive by design. #LILAC23

Day two of #LILAC23 - presenting later (self-plug, self-plug) - but for now, settling in for @mariaoliviaking’s keynote on accessibility, education and libraries.

Valuable discussion about finding support, either within your institution or sector or wider. For me, Twitter has been my main networking tool. I don’t think any of my #ebookSOS, #dataSOS, anti-racism, decolonisation or Wikipedia work would have happened without it! #LILAC23

@ThomasPeachLib pointed out that getting involved in EDI initiatives (to tackle whichever -ism) usually always involves more work on top of the regular, rather than dedicated time carving out for it. #LILAC23

@jsecker quoting Cicero - ‘if you have library and a garden, what more do you need?’

A cat, of course! #LILAC23

More cheerleading impulses repressed - this time for @ThomasPeachLib @LibrarianNaomi and @NaomiLASmith, at the first keynote, on new professionals. #LILAC23

If, like me, you never have a pen or forgot your business cards, haven’t updated them in years 🥺, feel it’s too yuppie/corporate to have them in the first place (or you’re not @playbrarian and his hand-pressed ones) - can I suggest the QRcard app for your lockscreen? #LILAC23

Downside of attending parallels sessions presented by people you think are amazing (right now it’s @WoodsieGirl) is having to resist the urge to stand up and whoop when they start. I wanna be everyone’s little personal cheerleader. #LILAC23
