Six thoughts on the Lions' free-agency approach so far — and what they could do next We're more than a full week past the official start of free agency, and the Detroit Lions' 2025 roster is starting to take shape. Most of Detroit's signings have been re-signings, but that's not necessarily a bad thing for a team that was just the No. 1 seed in a historically competitive division. Here are six thoughts about what the Lions have done so far, and what they could do next. 1. What’s with the Lions’ approach? After setting a franchise record for wins (15) last season, the Lions have taken a more measured approach into this offseason than in years past. On the one hand, that’s generally a good sign; not only does the team not have as many glaring weaknesses, but it’s also an indicator that they have a stockpile of up-and-coming talent to consider paying in the next couple of years (which they do). The teams who often “win” free agency are ones with massive deficiencies and little future-money concerns to think about.  On the other hand, their failure to win a playoff game last year has made it all the more apparent how hard it is to reach the mountaintop, so I do get the concern from the fans’ standpoint. As the adage goes, if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. And the idea that the Lions could be idly standing by as other NFC contenders continue throwing money at high-priced free agents is not a fun place to be, no matter how you feel about the talent on your team’s roster.  But in my opinion, too many people are discounting the impact a historic level of defensive attrition had on this team in 2024. “Running it back” does not mean the Lions were okay with being eliminated in the divisional round; it signifies the belief they were robbed of a historic season by having half of its defensive starters knocked out of the lineup with season-ending injuries, and want to see the process through. As so many have said about that loss to the Commanders, it was just a bad day to have a bad day. We didn’t see that version of the Detroit Lions once over a 17-game regular season. Though I might be contratary to popular opinion, I think it would be irresponsible to overreact by making massive, sweeping changes that could jeopardize the sustainability of their contending window. Detroit still has a handful of deficiencies to solve — namely, at edge and the offensive and defensive interiors — but by returning a majority of the talent from a year ago, they’re in a good spot. The only impact departure from Detroit's roster who hasn't been replaced is offensive guard Kevin Zeitler, and there's still time to figure that out. 2. It’s still free agency NFL free agency is a long process. While most impact players seem to be off the board already, a high volume of quality players is available at almost every position. Last year, the Lions signed Zeitler a week after the official start of free agency, and he ended up being one of their best players in 2024. Two years ago, safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson was signed a week after free agency officially opened.  The Lions still have $45.2 million in open cap space (according to Spotrac), sixth-most in the NFL. It’s also worth pointing out that the Lions have all of their picks in the first five rounds of the 2026 draft, plus an extra compensatory pick in Round 3, so they have plenty of capital to add via trade, if that’s the route they choose. 3. About Za’Darius Smith... While I’ve understood (and even liked) most of the Lions’ offseason approach so far, I’m still questioning why they let go of edge rusher Za’Darius Smith, who they painstakingly acquired from the Cleveland Browns at last year’s deadline, unless the plan is to bring him back — or they were clearing money to add an even better player. It’s never been more apparent how important it is to have reliable, consistent production coming off the edge, and the Lions don’t have that right now opposite of Aidan Hutchinson, who will be coming off of a severe leg injury the next time we see him. I have a hard time believing Holmes is staking his organization’s hopes and dreams on the health of Marcus Davenport. Smith, meanwhile, was tied for third in pressures (36) from Weeks 11-18 and recorded four sacks.  Holmes’ detailing of how difficult it was to acquire Smith, both at his end-of-season press conference and the NFL Combine, makes me question the idea that this edge group is a finished product. Why would you want to run the risk of having to go through all of that again?  I feel like Smith’s return is still an option. Smith, 32, is still floating around, and I can’t imagine his price is much more than it was when he signed his last contract ($11.5 million average annual value), given in 2022, he was coming off a similar season to the one he had in 2024.  4. Back at a bargain Confession time: I wrote — on several occasions — that between Zeitler, cornerback Carlton Davis III and defensive lineman Levi Onwuzurike, the player I least expected back was Onwuzurike. In the end, he was the only returning player from that group. Hand up, that’s on me.  I thought the defensive tackle market was poised to go crazy, and that’s exactly what it did. Unfortunately for Onwuzurike, however, he couldn’t cash in like Milton Williams, a similar player who signed for four years, $104 million with the New England Patriots.  Onwuzurike’s limited market is probably related to his lengthy injury history. In any matter, his one-year deal for $5.5 million has to be the best deal signed by Holmes this offseason. He might not be a player who can singlehandedly elevate the defensive line, but the Lions already have a couple of those guys in Hutchinson and Alim McNeill, and Onwuzurke is a guy who can capitalize on the opportunities presented by his teammates. In the four games before the bye week, when Detroit’s line was almost at full strength (outside of Davenport missing two games), Onwuzurike recorded 16 pressures and 1½ sacks. With some reinforcements around him, I feel he could have a sensational 2025 season — and at an absolute bargain.  Another re-signing I liked a lot was wide receiver Tim Patrick on a one-year deal with a $2.5 million cap hit. A reunion made a ton of sense for both sides after Patrick revitalized his career following two seasons out of the game. I’m intrigued by what his connection with quarterback Jared Goff will look like after a full, healthy offseason and training camp. 5. Upgrading on the margins When you have the financial commitments that Detroit does, you must dig to find a competitive edge by making small, marginal improvements. I think the Lions have done that this offseason. The decision to part ways with linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin to sign Grant Stuard, and add a nose tackle with the upside of Roy Lopez were shrewd moves that will make a difference next season. And immediately finding a talented replacement for Davis, who took the highest offer available to him, in DJ Reed for $2 million less per season was another slick move by the general manager.  Plus — and this is no slight against the players being replaced — it's hard not to notice how the Lions have continued to refine their culture by bringing in guys that immediately have the look, feel and sound of Dan Campbell Guys. Sky’s the limit when the entire program is bought in.  6. Finding starters in the draft If the Lions don’t add another quality edge rusher in free agency or the draft, I wonder if they’ll find themselves drafting for need next month. It’s a common approach but one that Holmes has not deployed often. Even when they took two cornerbacks last year when they desperately needed corners, it could be argued they just took what the board gave them. Terrion Arnold was never supposed to fall into the twenties, and Ennis Rakestraw, the pick at No. 61, was a popular first-round mock pick for Detroit. This year, it might be a similar situation, where it just so happens the Lions’ biggest need is the position that’s most likely to have the best player available at pick Nos. 28 and 60. Being forced to fill a starting job via the draft is not an ideal position, but it’s a scenario that might work out, given the talent of this year’s defensive end class and Holmes’ ability to mine gems. nbianchi@detroitnews.com @nolanbianchi This article originally appeared on The Detroit News: Six thoughts on the Lions' free-agency approach so far — and what they could do next
