Astronomy Ph.D. student Shaniya Jarrett is using #AI to decode gravitational waves created by colliding #BlackHoles.
Her work will help prepare for NASA's #LISAMission, a space-based observatory scheduled to launch in 2035 that will detect gravitational waves billions of light-years away 🔭

10 years ago, the two LISA Pathfinder test masses were successfully released into free-fall
The release was a very delicate operation, and the technology required a great deal of research and design, so everyone was anxious!

The LPF laser was a Nd:YAG 1064 nm laser which delivered approximately 35 mW. We immediately demonstrated full functionality!

Today, 10 years ago, we had the first laser light on LPF! 💛🛰️
Laser interferometry was used on LPF to track the position of the test masses along the sensitive axis, and will be used on LISA too for the same purpose.
