Honoré de Balzac’ın Le Chef-d’œuvre inconnu (Bilinmeyen Şaheser) adlı kısa öyküsünden esinlenerek çekilen film, bir ressam ve modeli arasındaki gerilimli sanatsal süreci, zamana meydan okuyan bir sabırla anlatıyor. Uzun yıllardır sanattan uzaklaşmış usta ressam Edouard Frenhofer (Michel Piccoli), genç bir sanatçı olan Nicolas ve onun sevgilisi Marianne (Emmanuelle Béart) tarafından ziyaret edilir. Nicolas’ın önerisiyle Frenhofer, yıllar önce tamamlayamadığı La Belle Noiseuse (Güzel Gürültücü) adlı tablosunu tekrar yapmaya karar verir ve model olarak Marianne’i seçer. Başlangıçta isteksiz olan Marianne, zamanla Frenhofer ile sanatsal ve psikolojik bir yolculuğa çıkar.
