An army of peasants defended their small, free republic on the coast of the North Sea, defeating a much larger army at the Battle of #Hemmingstedt. Outnumbered by an army of professional #Landsknechts, armored cavalry, and artillery, the peasants still managed to defeat the army.

The city of Rome was sacked by the forces of the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Around 6000 Spanish soldiers & 14000 German #Landsknechts mutinied due to lack of pay and attacked and looted Rome. Most of the #SwissGuard died buying time for the Pope to escape. #payyourmercenaries

#OnThisDay 1503,
The #BattleofCerignola, one of the first battles won by the use of gunpowder, occurred. The battle was fought between the Spanish and French, with 2000 German #Landsknechts mercenaries fighting for Spain, and 3500 Swiss #Reisläufer mercenaries fighting for France. The French lost.
