What's it like being in a cult? What's it like being a cult leader? VICE traveled from Siberia's Taiga forest to visit Vissarion, a cult leader who looks like Jesus and claims to be the voice of God, to a commune that looks like a hippie farm on the surface but vibes like a cult obsessed with social media. Larger than perhaps any other cult, we dive into Happy Science, a controversial new religious movement with over 12 million members in 90 countries. Finally, we hop online to wrap our minds around Unicult, an all-online cult filled with millennials studying everything from crystals to aliens.
And to quote Creed Bratton: "I've been involved in a number of cults, both as a leader and a follower. You have more fun as a follower, but you make more money as a leader."
