As Yearby, Dawes, and others (for example, Ruth Shim and Camara Jones) have shown, law is the primary mechanism by which structural discrimination is translated into on-the-ground realities—inequities in wealth, health care access, educational outcomes, and employment opportunities that drive health. The logical corollary is that if law is a fundamental driver of poor health outcomes and pervasive health inequities, it is also a fundamental mechanism through which longstanding patterns of disadvantage can be addressed and reversed. Students in public health programs must understand the power of law to address these health inequities. If those programs are not giving them the skills to harness public health law, they are not adequately preparing students for public health practice, including community engagement, advocacy, and policy-making efforts associated with such work.

Law is a powerful SDoH and can be leveraged to ameliorate #StructuralViolence and racism #LawIsASDoH

This is exactly what has been happening re public health law, w/ (mostly) courts concluding that the only sovereign that can regulate for public health is the one that will categorically refuse to do so. #PHLaw #PHEthx 😡 #LawIsASDoH
