Just pushed code from my phone while at #LeadDevNewYork. What could go wrong?
It's interesting to touch on the concept of things that no one owns but everyone affects in the immediate wake of a talk on cultivating ownership. Get my mind going on all the things I've seen fall through the cracks. #LeadDevNewYork
"Knowing a lot of things does not inspire ownership" What a succinct way of putting a difficult reality from Rachelle Jensen #LeadDevNewYork
#LeadDevNewYork is afoot!
A photo of my LeadDev New York conference badge, indicating that I’m a speaker, I use he/him pronouns, and I am open to social interactions. Next to it is the agenda, showing the “Connecting Disabled Leaders” group that I am co-hosting.
So… I guess we’re doing this! 😁 #LeadDevNewYork #a11y
I’m at StaffPlus New York today! If you see a fella in a GitHub hoodie with my name on it, come say hi if 👋 #LeadDevNewYork
I loved the idea of "even if" statements of relative priorities and values I learned at #LeadDevNewYork.
"We will prioritize sourcing diverse candidates even if it costs more money to get them." "We will prioritize hiring the right candidate even if it takes longer." etc.
Just found this conf, want to go next year! "Management is not a promotion, management is a career restart." The New Manager Death Spiral - Michael Lopp | #LeadDevNewYork 2018
Woo, my talk on detangling production from #LeadDevNewYork is up! www.youtube.com/watch
and a variant of the slides for my #LeadDevNewYork talk can be found at http://lizthegrey.com under "Production Excellence".
Hey folks who enjoyed my talk at #LeadDevNewYork or my livetweets: please check out http://honeycomb.io I can only attend conferences and share my insights in as many places as I do because my employer @honeycombio finds it valuable to engage with the community :)
Make sure you're hiring people different from you.
and (10) make sure people are treated fairly and with respect so they can succeed. live your values. Read @lara_hogan's post on managing through difficult times. #LeadDevNewYork
(9) Be aware of how your own personality biases what people aspire to in your own organization. Are you compensating for that similarity bias in your evaluation process? #LeadDevNewYork
(8) Leading a team inherently causes you to receive the credit/visibility. But it's best to not hog it, share the visibility and recognition with the team who did the work. #LeadDevNewYork
It turns out executives are the *least* poised to make good decisions about tech. Lack of authority leads to the *worst* decisionmaker making the choice, or just delegating it back down. #LeadDevNewYork
(7) always have clear decision-making authority and accountability. otherwise you get decision purgatory involving way too many meetings, and escalating upwards over and over with nobody saying 'yes' or 'no' #LeadDevNewYork
(6) But have structure and process for the things you *need* and do often. But don't bother having process for things you only do once a year. #LeadDevNewYork
N^2 meetings don't scale. Communicate one set of goals and OKRs per team, rather than having endless cross-functional meetings. #LeadDevNewYork
(5) if you have "too many meetings", you're misaligned. "Meeting every single day" and introducing process to resolve things has diminishing returns. #LeadDevNewYork
(4) be aware of context! don't send a ream of paper to someone who won't read it! ask people what someone wants to know/how they prefer to hear information. manage sideways and up as well as down. #LeadDevNewYork
(3) Have a communications plan for everything. We don't just deploy code without testing and rollout plans, so why should we deploy organizational changes without a plan? #LeadDevNewYork
You have to be able to explain your team's work to get people to join your team, or fund your team. Telling stories is a learnable skill. Practice! #LeadDevNewYork
(2) Storytelling is a powerful skill for shared understanding and motivation (e.g. sales! or "evangelism"). #LeadDevNewYork
There was no parachute or going back to the exact same job as before. So how to cope? 10 tips.
(1) write well and quickly. communication matters! [ed: hiii, this is a thing we do well! --lizf] Writing out talking points are useful for talking to your team! #LeadDevNewYork
