I loved the idea of "even if" statements of relative priorities and values I learned at #LeadDevNewYork.

"We will prioritize sourcing diverse candidates even if it costs more money to get them." "We will prioritize hiring the right candidate even if it takes longer." etc.

Make sure you're hiring people different from you.

and (10) make sure people are treated fairly and with respect so they can succeed. live your values. Read @lara_hogan's post on managing through difficult times. #LeadDevNewYork

(9) Be aware of how your own personality biases what people aspire to in your own organization. Are you compensating for that similarity bias in your evaluation process? #LeadDevNewYork

(8) Leading a team inherently causes you to receive the credit/visibility. But it's best to not hog it, share the visibility and recognition with the team who did the work. #LeadDevNewYork

It turns out executives are the *least* poised to make good decisions about tech. Lack of authority leads to the *worst* decisionmaker making the choice, or just delegating it back down. #LeadDevNewYork

(7) always have clear decision-making authority and accountability. otherwise you get decision purgatory involving way too many meetings, and escalating upwards over and over with nobody saying 'yes' or 'no' #LeadDevNewYork

(6) But have structure and process for the things you *need* and do often. But don't bother having process for things you only do once a year. #LeadDevNewYork

N^2 meetings don't scale. Communicate one set of goals and OKRs per team, rather than having endless cross-functional meetings. #LeadDevNewYork

(5) if you have "too many meetings", you're misaligned. "Meeting every single day" and introducing process to resolve things has diminishing returns. #LeadDevNewYork

(4) be aware of context! don't send a ream of paper to someone who won't read it! ask people what someone wants to know/how they prefer to hear information. manage sideways and up as well as down. #LeadDevNewYork

(3) Have a communications plan for everything. We don't just deploy code without testing and rollout plans, so why should we deploy organizational changes without a plan? #LeadDevNewYork
